Could someone give me some dimensions of a 55-57 half ton hood please? I am looking to get a used 57 GMC hood shipped to me and need some dimensions (LxWxH) and a good guestimate for it's weight so that I can get a shipping price. Was thinking about using Greyhound for shipping. I've used greyhound before with success but never with anything this large. The seller isn't really wanting to box/wrap it, which I understand how that can be a pain being as it's so big, and I'm not sure if I should be worried. Has anybody shipped a large item like this without some kind of protection?
I wouldn't buy a hood that I couldn't see first and hand carry home. It doesn't take a very hard hit during shipping to the center/soft spot of the hood to stretch the metal causing it to oil can.

I agree with Mike B. You live in Texas man. There are thousands of 55-57 1/2 tons setting behind barns all over Texas. Find one close enough to go touch and carry home with you. You'll be glad you did.

While I would generally agree with both of you, finding any of the specific 57 GMC parts has been fairly challenging. It has the opening for the front emblem so the chevy hoods are different and this one is including the 57 emblem for the hood as well. Not sure what I will do. I'm on the fence about it. I'll call around for different shipping quotes and do a little investigating first before I make a decision.

If it's that rare and you can't make the trip to get it then pay the seller to build a box. Make it out of 7/16" OSB, screw the OSB to a 2x2 frame, screw two strips of 2x4 to the bottom so a forklift can get under the box, bungee cord the hood to the bottom so it won't bounce around inside the box and pay the freight. That's the ONLY way I'd have a hood shipped...many good hoods have been ruined by the shippers.

I would not recommend greyhound for your hood. I rode greyhound a few years ago and at one of the bus stations I sat and watched greyhound employees grabbing car parts from the storage compartment yanking them out and tossing them on to the concrete where other employees would grab them run over and toss them into the storage compartment of another bus. These guys look like they hate their job. If they hate their job they hate your hood. How many times will it be removed from one bus and tossed into another before it gets to you? And does it go on the top of the pile or on the bottom? It would be OK crated but if the seller won't crate it find another way.
It might be a pain in the neck to arrange safer transport, but it would be well worth it in the end. The weather is getting nice and people are starting to travel, you could find someone willing to haul your hood at least part of the way. My brother was just up here in Iowa from Oklahoma City. I know he would have hauled it for free.
I'm still thinking about my options. Im thinking I will try and convince the seller to build a box for it. Maybe a little extra cash will help motivate him. It's a good looking hood from what I can tell in the pictures, still got most of it's paint too. Even the '57 GMC emblem in the front. He's asking $500 for it, and the only reason why I think It's worth that much is because of the emblem which they go for $200-300 on ebay by themselves. What I don't want to do is spend this kind of cash and receive it messed up from shipping.

I am arranging for a stainless steel exhaust system from Waldron's Exhaust to be shipped via Fastenal. Waldron's suggested this: it saves 50% in shipping costs AND Fastenal can/will ship full-length pipes.
The ATHS meet is in KY, I'm sure transportation could be arranged once the inspection was completed. Lots of truck people travel from all over the US. Google them.

Gumbi, you don't say if you have a hood already and just looking for a replacement. If you have one with the hole in front now, I'd find a good Chevy hood and pay someone to cut the opening off the old one and weld it to the Chevy hood, probably for less than $500.
