Folks,

I am currently starting back on my 46 Chev 2 ton after many years of having it apart. My question is on the steering gear box, is there a bracket that holds it in place from the top as well, or just the one that mounts to the inside of the frame that the shaft goes through, out to the pitman arm. When I turn the steering shaft, the whole steering box and steering shaft moves up and down, before it engages. Any help is appreciated.

Regards

Kevin

Hey Kevin,
I took a look at mine, which is a 3/4 ton, and the steering box is mounted to the inside of the C channel with two bolts coming through the top of the frame to the steering box. Maybe someone with a big bolt will help with more info.
Good luck!

Vic,

Thank you for looking and responding. I know I have something incorrect, and unfortunately my pictures were deleted from our computer years ago accidentally. On the bright side I'm finding parts I forgot I had.😃

Thanks

Kevin

I remember when I started working on the 41 (again), I spent almost 2 full days looking for the accelerator bracket that I knew I had. I was looking in boxes of contents all over the property and just couldn't put my hands on it. Finally, I just sat down and grabbed a chug As I was calming myself down, I happened to look in a box that was right under my feet. And there it was, at the bottom of that box!
Rest assured Kevin...you are not alone it your journey to put your truck back together!

Regarding your steering box, I would wait for a response from someone that has a larger truck. My 41 may not be the best original example, as it was modified before I got it.

I have a 46 2-Ton, and will see what it looks like later.
You may remember it at the Stovebolt Reunion a few years ago.

Victor, I'll see you at the Homecoming in a month. chug shake

Vic,
I here ya regarding misplacing parts. I was looking for the manifold bolts last week for 2 hours, and they were marked in a bag. I only moved them numerous times looking for them. After that, a couple of highballs were in order.

Don,
I appreciate you looking. I know you said your truck was buried in the back of your shop, so no big rush, I've got numerous other things I can work on. Just see if the bolts go through the top of the frame and through the bracket that goes around the shaft. I might have the wrong length of bolt????

Thanks guys!

Don,
Not around the shaft, but around the steering box itself. Where the shaft goes through the frame.
Thanks

I don't think mine is a good comparison, 1957 Low Cab Forward 2 ton. Steering gear bolts directly on top of the frame rail right above the front cross-member, no bolts through the side. Only two bolts secure it to the top flange of the frame rail.

Figured out what the problem was. Thanks to all.
Mine has two bolts through the C channel, and two through the top of frame holding the two pieces of the (saddle)? Around the steering shaft that goes out to the pitman arm. I had the (saddle) on incorrectly. Once I turned it around on the shaft, the top bolts lined up properly.

Thanks again

Kevin
