Anyone have a kit they like. Prices are all over the place for a complete kit. Trans will be behind a mild 350 sbc. Maby a little better than stock.

Raybestos used to make a good kit, but any mid-priced rebuild kit should work well. Be sure to buy a kit that includes steel as well as fiber clutch plates. The cheap kits reuse the old steels, which is not a very good idea. Pay very close attention to getting the right cleararance between the clutch discs as the front and rear clutches are assembled.

Stay FAR away from any modification that's described as a "shift kit" unless you really enjoy rebuilding rear ends!

Jerry, when I was looking for a good rebuild kit (700r4) someone told me to get one for that was described as one for "towing/RV". Does that make sense?

Yes, possibly. The trick on a 700R4 is to install the "Corvette" overdrive clutch drum which has room for a couple of extra clutch plates and makes for a stronger OD section. 700's are also extremely sensitive to minor changes in the adjustment of the TV cable which controls shift points and throttle pressure. Be sure to install the vacuum switch and brake pedal switch that makes the torque converter lockup clutch work correctly.

Not a problem Victor. I may switch to a 700r4 for the overdrive. My rear end is from a 79 Nova and has 2.41 gears. So the OD May bs a better option than changing gears. Any suggestions on which 700 to use?

With 2.41 gears you don't need an overdrive. But the 87-93 700r4 is the best to start with. It has a few improvements. Always use a new hardened sunshell. The original ones crack and fail. Always! Use red clutches in the 3-4 clutck pack. There is no Corvette OD Clutch drum trick. The 3-4 clutches are shared. The trick is the corvette servo. This increases line pressures on the 2 through 4 shifts. But now there are better options from a variety of vendors. Personally on a street rig with under 300 hp don't go crazy. Red clutches. Aftermarket servo. And hardened sunshell. And a converter that works with your cam. If you have it built all the builders are aware of how to make one work.

I thought the 700r4 had a lower first gear than a TH350? And I’ll eventually change the 4.21 out for probably 3.08. But one thing at a time to get it on the road.

It does have a lower first gear. But OD would be useless. So you would want to consider that. I will add. I never use a 350 or 400 turbo any longer. Set up an overdrive auto is just more versatile. I also now am moving onto the electronic controlled 4l60e -4l80e in my projects. Even behind non computer controlled engines. That's not for everyone though. That's why the 700r4 is still popular. Also I build a lot of vintage 4x4 trucks. And use a 4l80e almost exclusively. With a stand alone controller I can create a number of different shift styles. From a hard hitting strip profile to soft as warm butter cruiser. Finally if you have a tire in the 27-28 inch height that 3.08 is a little tall still IMO. I prefer 3.43-3.54.

Thanks for the feedback Truckfarm72. I guess I’ll be looking for a 700R4 instead of going through the TH 350 I have. I just noticed your out of Spokane. Small world I’m just out of Post Falls.

I can set you up. But i won't sell a 700r4 unless I install it. To many have come back because of TV cable misadjustment. PM me if you want. I am leaving to Montana for 2 weeks though. I will be connected via phone.

Well I found a good working 1992 700R4 Technically a 4l60. It has no oil ports on the passenger side. Ser# 2BFM129A torque converter is a DE8F best I can tell it has a 1600 stall. Out of a 92 capris police car. Jerry what’s the correct way to wire the lockup. Looks like this trans version was only produced for three years. I’ll also freshen it up before installing it. I also found some 3.42 gears for the rear end. Should be a good combination.

700r4 is technically a 4l60. Like a 400 turbo became a 3l80. But. It's best to call it a 700r4. Also.... NO 700r4 or 4l60. Or 4l60e ever came without oil cooling ports. The police and hd 700r4 and later 4l60e cases came with larger 3/8th cooler line ports. Finally calling a 700r4 a 4l60. Not a 4l60e. Is like calling a 350 a 5.7 litre...

It has cooling ports but no extra ports like the 700r4. And it’s not electronic

There are no extra ports. Both the 700r4 and 4l60e have pressure test ports. And cooling ports. Every one

Ok. I guess I should explain. All gm auto trans have test pressure points. The early 700r4 has a couple on the passenger side. Basically 82-88. 88-93 700r4 have the test port on the other side. Now. The best cases are 88-93. Your 92 case is nothing special. Unless it's a true police and HD case. It has 3/8 th cooling ports. NO UPGRADE INCLUDES A CORVETTE OD CLUTCH ASSEMBLY. You probably and hopefully bought a caprice police case. 700r4. If so good. Build it and be happy. But i can replicate it all day long with a 88-93 truck. "K" Case. Nothing hard to find.
