I have a 590474 4 spd transmission. the date code above the chevron is C30 4 . Would this be a 1934 or 1944 transmission? Also on the top shifter plate 1 7 9 is cast into it.
Or I 7 9 can't tell if it is a number one or alphabet capitol I . What does that mean? Is the cover from another year? The gear shift lever is straight and has a redish brown tootsie pop knob. I ask because I have a spare 590474 from a 1938 3/4 ton and it is date coded B 18 7 main case and top cover. With typical black knob and bent shift lever.

Help with this mystery would be appreciated. Thanks.

The 590474 casting was used from 1931 thru 1947.

The shifter levers are the same from 1929 thru 1947, so having a bent one just means the owner bent it to suit his needs.

The redish brown knob sounds like a 1937 passenger car accessory knob (black was standard issue).

That's good reading, but he doesn't have a SM-420...he has what we call the 'crash box' trans.
