Question...is it possible to mount the flywheel
out of its correct (timing) position?

ie; 120 or 240 out, (3 pins)

If the 3 dowel pins are there, no. They are staggered so the flywheel only fits one way. I've heard of flywheels getting installed out of phase if the dowels get removed for some reason. I believe the bolt holes are evenly spaced, but not the dowel holes.

That is a very interesting question and answer. In all the years I have been playing with these motors, I have always set the motor up to tdc for No. 1 and then installed the flywheel so I could see how much, if any, the bb in the flywheel was off with respect to the pointer on the bellhousing and to remark the flywheel. I never in 40 years had an occasion to install the flywheel out of phase so to speak.

"Question...is it possible to mount the flywheel out of its correct (timing) position?"

As posted above by Jerry:

On all my stovebolt engines (216, 235, 261), the flywheels went on the same way, only one way.

There are 3 unevenly spaced dowels: there is only one way for the three of them to enter the dowel holes.
Maybe you have a flywheel that is missing a dowel, or two (as Jerry noted)?

No muss, no fuss, no fretting.

One way fits all - unless you are missing a dowell or two or three

Thanks guys,
Tim, actually my flywheel went on no problem first try,
I was just curious if it were possible.

On another note, you said "Maybe you have a flywheel that is missing a dowel or two",
I'm sure you know ...the dowels are actually on the crank flange. :-)

thanks again, this forum has been a tremendous help,
Jim

Jim,

I forgot where the pins/dowels are located.
I just remembered that it was foolproof (for fools like me).

Thanks dang

The BB should never line with the pointer anyways at TDC. I think the closest if ever got was 2 deg off was it not?

Usually, the "BB" in the flywheel was the timing mark.
"Usually", because I think some years did not have a BB - just timing marks (one mark being TDC/UDC).

There were stovebolt six engines that timed at TDC.
Different years and different 216/235/261 engines could have timed before TDC, at TDC, or after TDC, depending on the year/equipment.
