hello All...

Finally getting around to working on the 53 again. We have built up a 55 235 engine and followed the instructions in the tech tips to add an external oil filter.. https://www.stovebolt.com/techtips/full_pressure.htm

My question is with the two holes drilled in the block for the oil lines... which hole should be for oil sent TO the filter and which hole is for oil sent FROM the filter...

Thank you in advance.

Tim

The lower fitting toward the front of the block should be the supply line TO the full flow filter. Output from the filter needs to be plumbed to the upper, rearward fitting. Use at least 3/8" diameter braided pressure hose- - - -1/2" is better. If the filter adapter is mounted to the body or frame, use flex hoses, not hard lines. You can hard-plumb the filter if it's mounted to the block or intake manifold. The small 1/8" pipe port beside the front fitting can be plugged- - - -it was originally the return port from a bypass filter and all it does is drain back into the oil pan.

Thanks Jerry. That is the information that I needed.

I am looking to attach my filter to the block behind the alternator but would like to use braided steel lines to just make it easier to plumb... any ideas where to find those?

Much appreciated.

Most NAPA stores can fabricate those lines to whatever length you need, with the appropriate end fittings. Just ask for "single braid" hydraulic line- - - -it's overkill, rated for 3000 PSI hydraulic pressure. 40-50 PSI engine oil, even when it's at operating temperature, won't stress it at all. Any good hydraulic supply place and some farm tractor dealers would be other places to check.

Just in case you are interested, I attached a few pix to show you a hard line installation on a 261. The set up would be the same as yours. I used a TransDapt spin-on adapter. This one is also set for a bypass filter, but you can just eliminate the fittings for that if you don't want one. The rear fitting as a 1/8" NPT port for the oil gauge.

I included a few pictures of a 261 in the shop and one with a sister engine in my '57. One has the Frantz bypass located on the front of the intake manifold, the other on the rear.

Incidentally, the full flow/bypass combination design has Jerry's fingerprints all over it. I can't take any credit.

Is the oil clean enough to drink with the full flow & Frantz bypass combo?

Love it... nice clean look.

I have a 55 235 so I do not have any mounting holes on the side of the block... I may just fab a bracket and attach it to the generator/alternator holes...

Got it cranked today... found a couple of other problems so I need some additional guidance. I will start another thread for those issue and then resubmit final pics here of the oil filter location.

Thanks again.

Tim
