Hello I am in the UK. I recently imported a 1952 Chevrolet 6400 truck. The Vin Number on the title is 5VWF4789D. On the plate inside the drivers side door pillar it shows 5VWF4789. There is no letter D because of this I cant get the truck registered yet. Is there some where i can check the Vin number or is the letter D a typeo. Hope some one can help. Thanks Howard.

Hopefully someone will be along in a bit to verify, but I'm betting a typo... if you'd had a Canadian built truck I do have the manual with the vintage decoder for that.

5VWF4789
5 = Kansas City assembly plant
VW = 6400
F = June
4789-1000 = 3789th 6400 out of that plant

If it is a USA truck?

Hello yes the truck is a US truck, I thought the last letter was a typo but lets see if any body else can shed some light. Many thanks Howard

Where in the Vehicle Number are you hoping to find a "D".

Can you post a photo of your vehicle number?

Howard,

I'll chime in and say in all my years of doing Chevrolet research (1930's thru 1950's) I've never seen a "unit number" with a sufix letter. The "unit number" was always the last set of numbers in the serial number.

The page Tim linked is actually a copy from the Chevrolet Specification Booklet.

Where was the title issued? Somewhere in the US? Maybe they have added a suffix code "D" for some reason. You may need to contact the Motor Vehicle Department in that particular state to find out.

Have you contacted your DMV and asked then what you need to do? That's where I'd start...

Yes I have had a letter from them and they want proof of the year of the truck, I sent in the title with the year on it, but because there was that letter D on the end of the Vin Number and not on the plateof truck they are being picky. I know its a 52 but try telling them that. Thanks Howard

The "VW" in your serial number identifies the year as 1952 and Series as 6400

SW = 1949 6400
TW = 1950 6400
UW = 1951 6400
VW = 1952 6400

The format changed in 1953...

Hi Howard,
Bureaucrats like paper evidence. Perhaps the serial number info in 1952 Chevrolet Truck information kit will make them happy. Show them a copy of page 57 with the serial number info.

That page is linked-to in my first post above.

The whole 1952 Chevrolet Truck Specifications document is also on-line.
