'50 3100 216 - see photo, this eng is coming out and will be replaced with a 235. My question is (out of curiosity) is this the way a number "1" would have been stamped in the Serial number. Looks strange to me. The entire Ser # HBA943391 (? last digit 1 ?)
In your case it probably is. BTW I could be wrong but your engine may be a ‘49. I have been wrong 2 or 3 times already today. Just ask my wife.🤷ðŸ¼â€â™‚ï¸

Thanks Martin, I'll probably research that a bit farther, can't see the casting date, but the Eng I.D. (3835497) states '50-'51. Oh well, it'll be coming out shortly.

Update: HA...jus looked up a different Eng I.D. site (inliners) and it says....'42-'53
3835497 is a Block Casting Code for a 216 - 1948-1951
Engine Serial Number: HBA943391 or HBA 94339I (the "I" stamp was used "interchangeably"/mistakenly for the "1" stamp at the factory)
H = 1950 Flint, Michigan engine plant B = 3100 A = regular transmission (3 speed) and clutch 943391-1000 = 942,391st engine out of that plant that year.
Check your paper title for the serial number used. Prior to the mid 1950's it was common for the DMV to use the engine serial number on the paper title. If that's the case, don't scrap your engine until you contact your local DMV to get a new serial number assigned.

The capital letter "I" was used as the number 1 on my '38. I think is was common practice at that time since I've seen others done the same way.
