I need a new muffler for my Chevy pickup (56). I will be installing it myself. Just curious to know what some of you guys have done. Order from one of the vendors? Take it to a shop and see if they'll sell me something that will work? I'd rather not have to pay shipping and wait around for delivery so I like the second option better. I'd like to know who you guys have used in the past or if you've been able to get your mufflers locally. Thanks.
I got the muffler for my '53 one ton at a local independent muffler shop. It works fine and cost my $30. I always like to work with local shops, just to help keep them in business. And they are generally really good at working with you on odd ball stuff (like our old trucks).

I am currently digging back in to a 1953 3800 (one ton) with a nine foot bed. I've owned it since 1979, and drove it until 1982 (or so). My wife got me involved in restoring it back in 2002, got the body removed and the frame redone, then things came up. Now I am retired and starting again. If anyone is interested I have photos on Imagur ( https://timwhiteblues.imgur.com/ ). I live way back in the woods in the Ozarks on 40 acres at the end of a 2 1/2 mile private road.

If you just need a new muffler, a direct bolt-in replacement for the stock one is Walker 21028 and the replacement hanger to fit the factory assembly the Walker 35609. Both should be available through most FLAPS if you don't want to order online.
That's great information. Thanks very much. BTW, I checked a couple of my local FLAPS chains and they don't carry it. Going to be taking the muffler by the local shop tomorrow and see if they can fix me up with something that will work.
JW51, '55.2 to '59 six cylinder, not sure about other years. Attached file has the specs. Walker runs a $30 rebate on that series of mufflers about once a year. The mufflers cost about $40 and net down to $10 if you buy one during the rebate period.
