Has anyone had any experience shaving the hood center strip on a 47-53 3100? Any help would be greatly appreciated. | | | | Joined: Nov 2001 Posts: 1,516 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2001 Posts: 1,516 | You have to weld the two hood halves together. Then smooth it out as necessary. You then also kinda lose the front hood emblem. | | | | Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 88 Member | Member Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 88 | | | | | Anonymous Unregistered | Anonymous Unregistered | The way I did it was to weld a strip of metal into the valley left once you remove the hood strip. I would recommend that you do this while the hood is mounted/bolted to the truck and also to just use welds about a quarter inch long staggered along the sides. You will then need to spread some body filler over it and you are done.
Too much welding will warp the panel. | | | | Joined: Apr 2001 Posts: 439 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Apr 2001 Posts: 439 | Remove the strip. But the hood should still be one piece, dont take it completely apart. Weld the seam up solid (following regular sheetmetal welding practices). Dolly the 'valley' up so from the bottom it doesn't look like it was done. Use a little filler and your set. | | | | Joined: Jul 2006 Posts: 584 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Jul 2006 Posts: 584 | Hood will probably vibrate a bit, so I would suggest a continuous weld so the filler doesn't crack when vibrating (this as opposed to the staggerd welds). Still work in sections so the sheetmetal doesn't get too hot and out of shape. | | | | Joined: Dec 2006 Posts: 197 Wrench Fetcher | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Dec 2006 Posts: 197 | | | | | Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 88 Member | Member Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 88 | Thanks everyone. Your advice has really been a big help. I think I am going to tig weld the seam solid a section at the time, then smooth with filler. Also, has anyone had problems with the sheetmetal sagging on each side of the center strip at the rear of the hood? My hood has this problem, but it isn't mounted on the truck yet. Should the sheetmetal level out once it is able to rest on the hood to cowl seal? Thanks again for your help. | | | | Joined: Apr 2001 Posts: 439 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Apr 2001 Posts: 439 | I fit mine before I welded it. I ended up pulling the back further apart which caved the middle in. Haven't gotten to the point of dollying it all up. There is a little plate on the inside of the hood that is held on by four bolts. I took that off and welded up the space once the hood was the right distance apart. That holds the hood in the place it should be as you weld/straighten the rest.
Good Luck. | | |
