So, I took the master cylinder off of my 58 Viking 6500. It has a 1 1/2 inch bore. Ordered the rebuild kit. Couldn't find a new master. Go figure. You would think I'd be used to that by now. Fortunately it is in good condition. The bore looks good. The reservoir has some light rust inside. I would like to dip it in Evaporust to clean. However, I don't know if the Evaporust would have an adverse effect on the bore. Any one have experience with this,or suggestions? Also, if the bore is still nice is it necessary to hone the surface before the rebuild?

Thanks, and have a good Labor Day,
Rich

I wouldn't think it would hurt it, just don't leave it in the solution for an extended time and blow out all the passages when done.🛠

Ok, I was a bit premature. What initially looked like lumpy crud on the walls of the bore turned out to be pits after a good cleaning. Now I am wanting to know how much can be removed safely from the bore? If I cant bore, what options do I have ? I believe I read a post about wheel cylinder stainless sleeving, is that possible with the master?

It's possible to set up the master cylinder in a lathe and bore out the casting for a sleeve. That requires some pretty creative setup work to get the bore hole parallel with the spindle so the hole can be bored accurately. Sometimes a special mounting fixture needs to be fabricated first. Once the hole is enlarged, then a piece of seamless stainless steel tubing is pressed in, and bored and honed to the proper diameter. If the master cylinder has a blind hole with out openings on both ends it's a bit more difficult to machine it, but not impossible. The fluid entry and vent holes can be drilled by going through the fill hole before final finishing of the bore. It's a pretty long and tedious process, but the stainless liner should last about 3 days past forever!

It does have the removable end so you can see thru it. There is a lip at the end of the threads though. I don't have the skills to machine my self. So I will have to find a good machinist.
Is there anyone that others would recommend?

I'm on the road...look up Mark Frappier, he did one for me the past Spring. He sends it back to you with an invoice and you just mail him a check...very old school, no credit cards. Will look new when you get it back, then install your new kit.

I did a search for Mark Frappier as you suggested Mike. Others have also recommended him. I gave him a call, and he was great to deal with. He brought to my attention that I had the rare 1 1/2 master cylinder. That's as large as he can resleeve. I sent it to him and had it back in a week. I am very pleased with the results, looks great. Cant wait to get it bolted in. I would recommend his service to anyone. He does wheel cylinders also. For anyone needing this service his number is 413-789-8665.
Almost there. Bought a roll of the Copper/Nickle tubing to fab all new lines. Looking forward to finally get to drive down the road this week end.
