I have seen it installed both ways, but would like to know how it is really supposed to be installed... the little spring that is on the end of the foot parking brake release rod on my 1950 3600. Right where it attaches to the arm that it pulls on. Pic: Foot parking brake release rod spring

Any help appreciated!

That is not where it goes.
It goes on the other side of the bar. That weird nut fits nicely inside the spring.
You have to ask yourself, why would they not just use a regular hex head nut instead of that shouldered one?

I have always been readily able to become disorientated by different orientations in illustrations/photos.

The orientation of spring/bar/washer/nut in the photos looks to me like the orientation in the parts manual.

Maybe I need another drink?

** Norcal Dave ** I think the spring that you have on the release rod should be Spring 4.597 that goes on the 4.603 Bar that attaches to 4.625 Pedal Shaft

The 50 and earlier have two springs. One you can see (which I believe Dave has in the wrong place), and one which is between the parking brake bracket and the toeboard where you can't see.
In either '51 or '52 they changed everything and discontinued the spring in Dave's picture.

My pic was taken before I dismantled the truck. When I put everything back together, I actually did install the spring opposite from that- on the back side of the plate, slipping it over the long barreled nut, because my '51 GMC in my front yard has just the one spring behind the plate as well. The whole assembly seems to work fine either way though. There are some odd things about my '50 3600, like the radiator surround mount is the earlier 1949 two-hole style.

Marzach, the spring on the pedal shaft is a much stouter spring, and at present it is installed inside the cab, on the pedal shaft between the bracket and the firewall (hard to see, but as in this pic): pedal shaft spring

Thanks for the info guys!
