I am trying to find the part numbers for the front brake shoes on my 58 Viking 6500. Napa only lists a 14 inch shoe for the 6500. My truck is equipped with the Eaton 7000 pound front axle with 15x 2 1/4 inch shoes. Any and all info is greatly appreciated.

Found in my 1955-63 Chevrolet Truck Parts Book;

1957-59 Ser. 5-6 w/ 7000 lb axle...(Wagner FD-243449)....p/n 3745800

If you have shoes that aren't bent or damaged, they can be relined. Try to find a shop that works on big rigs- - - -they will know if there's a business in your area that relines clutches, brakes, etc. Even shoes with the brake linings bonded to them respond to a little attention with a rosebud torch- - - -warm up the shoes and the linings pop right off. Then new linings can be bonded or riveted back on.

There are several auctions for 15" brake lining material (without shoes) on Ebay right now- - - - -cheap! Search for "2 1/4 inch brake linings". It's not terribly difficult to reline your own shoes- - - -you just need the right size rivets and some new lining material.

Really, I never considered relining myself. I wonder if their is a youtube video that outlines the procedure. Any idea how you determine the rivet size?

The hole size in the brake shoe determines which rivet you need. The rivet heads and the pre-drilled holes in brake linings are standardized, and there are thousands of brake rivets at dirt cheap prices on Ebay, leftovers from closed down parts stores, etc. If you don't have a riveting machine, just clamp a flat tipped round punch in a vise with a little bit of the punch sticking up, and use that as an anvil while you buck the rivet with a piece of steel round stock and a big ball peen hammer.

If you get the lining material in a bulk roll and it's not pre-drilled, a step drill can be made by carefully grinding a regular drill bit to match the hole in the shoe and create a counterbore in the lining for the rivet head. Use the quill stop on a drill press to create a uniform-depth counterbore for each rivet. It's a lot easier with a dedicated relining machine, but a work-around isn't impossible.

Thanks for the info Jerry. It seems the brake part numbers Mike procured for me are no longer available. Google has turned up nothing. With neither the front or rear shoes available for my truck, investing in relining might be a reasonable investment.

I am sure you have an old school clutch and brake shop somewhere in Pittsburg. Ask around, they are often obscure little shops in remnant automotive/industrial areas. I had the brakes relined using my shoe cores for a relatively decent price.

There is a place in Denver, CO called Clutch Exchange if you can't find a place near you.
