65 chevy short step
4 speed 283 motor

i wish to install a dual exhaust, something that sounds nice and healthy but also something that wont rattle my wife's teeth if she rides in the vehicle.
i installed a square under bed gas tank from early classic enterprises so that will be a factor to consider in installation.
my preference is to have the exhaust exiting straight out the back (are there any links to pictures showing different exhaust exit options?)

are there any vendors who sell prefabricated bolt on systems or are most exhaust systems for these trucks custom made at a muffler shop?
also any recommendations on muffler choice?

thanks for the advice

The best way is to have a muffler shop build systems for it. I like real long glasspacks, like 30 in. They have a deep mellow tone that is very quite.

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.

For my '62 with the 327/SM420, I went with the Ram Horn manifolds and custom dual exhaust from Midas Muffler and used Magnaflow mufflers.

On my old '63 with the 283/327/400 engines at various times in conjunction with a TH400 tranny, I had a set of headers and a custom dual exhaust with glass packs.

Both sets had the mufflers outside the rails and under the cab and exited just in front of the rear wheel.

Both sets served me well. The problems I had were with the headers. I got tired of constantly having to replace exhaust gaskets and periodically replacing the headers.

I would advise sticking to the Ram Horn manifolds. They may not be as free flow as headers, but they will help develop torque and you will have less trouble with them.

I ran the exhaust outside the frame rails on my '65 short bed. It had an underbed fuel tank also.

Long tube headers and glass packs... it sounded quite nice.
