As with just about everything else about our truck, I want to rebuild its mechanical fuel pump (diaphram and check valves starting to fail).
Can someone please clue me in to some details about this unit -- with top glass bowl w/integrated screen and metal bale?
After finding the model number, I would then like to find a kit for it.
If no kit available then perhaps buying a cheap mechanical pump from say, Rockauto and cannibalizing its parts for use in the glass bowl type -- if that idea will work..?
Any information and suggestions here are appreciated.

Sure Filling Station and the other parts suppliers also have the pump and maybe the kit to rebuild.
The pump without the glass top is available at almost every parts store.

The rebuild kit on eBay is the same price as the whole unit from classic parts.

Thanks... I'm now assuming that the unit is an ACDelco, but what is the model number? I might then be able to cross reference it to something more commonly available to act as a donor for the guts...

I kinda did what you are pondering ...

My '54 3104 had a metal body fuel pump when I bought the truck. I bought a reproduction glass bowl pump, but the arm didn't work. So I mated the top half of the reproduction glass bowl pump with the bottom half of the all metal fuel pump back in 2011. It worked fine and still does.

Don't know if you could pull the diaphram and valves out a metal pump and put into the glass pump. Replace the cork gasket for the glass bowl. It will shrivel like a cornflake if allowed to dry out while the pump is apart. Chevs of the 40's may have them.

Maybe the 6-cyl pump part number in the 1958 Parts Catalog will help you find a donor metal body fuel pump.

The 1954 (55-1st) fuel pump is slightly different from previoius models. The inlet and outlets were at a 20-deg angle to the block instead of being parallel as in earlier models. The pump in your photo has the correct angled fuel lines for 1954-1955(1st). I believe that the pumps were all metal for 1955(2nd) and beyond.

So lotsa help there -- thanks, Lonnie. Too bad the $5.25/unit prices didn't hold over during these 60-odd years, huh.

I also re-found my old factory assembly manual and voila! there it was. Btw, I forgot to mention that the engine is actually a '57 rebuild (25 years ago). In which case the actual pump for this engine (not truck body vintage) will be a metal pump with a slightly longer lever for a bit more pressure. If it can be mated to the glass top it could be a 'win' all the way around in my 'Nifty Department'!

Methinks I'll just go ahead and order the inexpensive Airtex/ACDelco metal replacement (for 1957) from RockAuto and go from there.
The worse that can happen is a 'no match' for cannibalizing, and then just use the new pump instead when the glass model finally forgets to push gas.
Oddly enough they also carry the cork/rubber glass seals for less than a buck (as well as the glass bowl w/seal) ..but alas, not those glass pumps.

Nice touch with the inline gas filter. I also have one (in the toy box) with the porous stone element. That may go on the line next ;-)

The fuel filter is a Durex-Moraine #986640 filter produced by GM from 1950-1954 (maybe 1955-1st). Was offered in 1955. Has a glass bowl and porous bronze filter. An earlier Durex-Moraine glass bowl filter was produced from the '40s to 1949. Both are occasionally on ebay.

Yep, that's what I have from storage. I wonder how effective they are at filtering ..any less so than those common inline clear plastic or metal (with pleated element) filters?
