So, my 54 3100 is all registered and plated. I decided to take it down the street to see how it does. It accelerates decent at first then begins to hesitate. It will then back fire and it seems to get the power back. I changed plugs, wires, cap, rotor. I run recreation gas which is fresh. Same result. Amy suggestions? Thanks!

It sounds like you're getting a lean surge. Check (or change) your fuel filter, and make sure the float level in the carburetor is adjusted correctly. A too-low float will let the carb run dry or very lean on acceleration, then catch up and pull well as the float chamber refills.

Thanks HotRod! The truck sat for a very long time before my purchase. The carb needs to be rebuilt. Do you know of anyone who can rebuild it reasonable?

Get a kit and give it a try yourself. It's not as complicated as you might think. Take pictures of every step as you go.👍🏻

These carbs are not rocket science- - - - -if you can read an instruction sheet and make accurate measurements with a ruler or a pocket machinist's scale, there's no reason not to buy a repair kit and try a rebuild yourself. Just make sure all the air and fuel passages are completely clean and blow a lot of air through them with a high pressure nozzle from an air compressor. Then reassemble everything in accordance with the instructions in the kit and make the adjustments they recommend.
