Howdy folks.

So, I was cleaning the glass on the old '65 C10, wiping down some anti-fog off the interior and the rear view mirror fell off clear off the glass.

I know there is some sort of adhesive that goes on there, but I have no idea what it is called.

Some of the old sealant is still on the inside of the glass, I guess scrape it with a razor blade?

Anyway, I've never done this job before, so thought I'd check in with the experts.

Drop by your friendly FLAPS and ask for a tube of rear view mirror glue. They will have it, no problem. Follow the directions to a T and all will be well.🛠

My 1965 had the RVM screwed to the metal just above the glass. I doubt very much your "glass mounted" RVM was original (which you probably already knew).

In some of my other cars, I've struggled to get the RVM adhesive to work. You have to completely remove any trace of the old adhesive, then use a grit to roughen the surface and then apply the new adhesive and finally the mirror. Not to mention needing to hold the mirror (staying motionless) until it dries or your arm wants to fall off, whichever comes first.

Well, my truck is a base model, as near as I can tell... but lots of things have been changed over the years so who knows?

I've never noticed any holes or signs of holes in the inside cab roof, which is all metal for me. I don't have the fancy chrome trim tho'.

I will have to poke around and see if I can find where the original one was.

I took a few photos of the mirror while it is off.

Here they are :

I am curious what it is off of now.

Maybe a later model Chevy truck or car?

Might be a generic parts store replacement, dunno.

I did see what looked like a date mark inside the day/night level that looked like 1977 so maybe it's from a old square body?

Anyway, thought I'd post a link to the pics to see what can be found out.

When replacing loosen the set screw and remove the plug. That's the part that must be remounted to the glass. It also needs to be very clean for the adhesive to work. Once it's attached and the adhesive has set the mirror slides back on and the set screw is tightened.

I did the clean up today and put the button back on the window with the goop, taped the button in place for while it is drying/setting up.

We'll see if it holds it tomorrow or not.



Anyone have any idea what that mirror is out of? I'm just curious.

It looks like a generic replacement I bought about 15 years ago.

Woog, I emailed a few pics of original mirrors to you.

Small consolation,at least it didn't take out your windshield. I've seen the inner glass lamination removed in such cases and cracking the glass.
The idea is the mirror is designed to break away in the event of an impact by your head etc during a collision to further lessen the chance of damage to you.

I've seen these style mirrors used on American,Japanese and European makes and models so it's hard to pinpoint an exact source.
The mirror boss (the metal attachment on the glass) however does look like the style used by GM (Europe) and no doubt GM (USA) for some years from the early 80s.

I'm also glad no-one was tempted to suggest super-glue,that stuff can actually crack the glass as it cures.
It generates huge amounts of heat.

I used the permatex goop kit with the little cleaner thingy on it... it is holding so far today, but I haven't given it the rail road track test yet, so we shall see.

It was a new thing to fix for me, I hope I did it right.

I took a few pics that I need to add up to that page I guess.
