Hi, While trying to remove the rear end so I could change to disc brakes. The U-Bolts were giving me a hard time so I decided to cut them. This of course lead me to search and see if replacements were available. Before Cutting them.

I found U-Bolts yet the springs were nothing like mine. This lead me to the Heritage Center and on page 86 of the "52 manual. I found my springs Semi-Ecliptic and Auxiliary. Yet these springs are for a 1 Ton at least.

Why are they on my Truck

Those look exactly the same as the rear springs on my 53 1 ton. Best I can figure is that the bottom set is the standard spring for the 3600 and 3800 (3/4 and 1 ton), but the top set are the overload springs from a 5000 series. I think that the original owner of my truck special ordered these springs, for use hauling stuff on the farm. Partly I think it is factory because of the frame brackets, which aren't shown for any other series but the 5000 and 6000. I don't even see this listed as a RPO.
On the other hand, it makes the rear end hell for stout!

I am currently digging back in to a 1953 3800 (one ton) with a nine foot bed. I've owned it since 1979, and drove it until 1982 (or so). My wife got me involved in restoring it back in 2002, got the body removed and the frame redone, then things came up. Now I am retired and starting again. If anyone is interested I have photos on Imagur ( https://timwhiteblues.imgur.com/ ). I live way back in the woods in the Ozarks on 40 acres at the end of a 2 1/2 mile private road.

Those springs are exactly what I have [correction: HAD] on my '50 3/4 ton. If you are changing to a different rear end, are you sure you need the stock U-bolts? The stock 3/4 ton rear end is a huge diameter compared to most rear axles that you would be replacing it with....isn't it?

I changed my 3600 rear end out to a GM rear disc just this year.

Julian, my truck has seven spring leaves same as your bottom spring pack. I do wish mine had the overloads since it does need more spring when hauling hay or firewood. The good thing with overloads is they don't cause the ride to suffer, only coming into play when the load increases.

On an aside, that's a nice TR4A! I had a black 67 4A back in the late 70's and sure wish it was still in the herd. Prior to the 4, had a 61 TR3 that I REALLY wish was still around.

Good luck, Ron

Tim, I was leaning towards the same concept. That the bottom springs are for a 3/4 ton. Because that's the only U-Bolt I could find besides the 1/2 ton. I don't make things often. Spent 36 years as a Electrician

Dave thanks for the confirmation.

Ron, If you'd like the springs, and brackets that attacked to the Frame. I can send them to you. This is of course minus the U-Bolts that will be cut.

I drove little British Cars all thru High School. The one I wish had not gotten away was a Right hand Drive TR4A I got a hold of my Senior Year.

By the way, when I had to replace the U-bolts on my rear end (my trucks rear end) I could not find them any where. So I took one of my old ones to a local shop that works on semis, and they made them for me at a reasonable price. It felt more secure, especially after seeing what bad shape the old ones were!

Julian, my first car when I was 17 was a '59 TR-3A I bought for $800. I miss it dearly... actually the reason I ended up with this Chevy truck project is because I couldn't find an older TR within my budget!!

Dave, I started out with a Model A. Which I learned a awful lot. I was a City Boy. Who had a large Oak tree in the front yard. That tree supported my efforts by supporting the Body and engine from it's branches. This was in 1973. I was 15 and didn't have a clue what I was doing.

Later came MG Midgets, Triumph TR4A, and A Alfa '69 boattail.

Julian, it was 1979 and we towed that TR-3A home in boxes...I had never worked on a car before- no clue either...and I'm still learning. Had a TR-4A several years later- having roll-up windows was a dream.. Good luck with your 3600!

Just for information.
Looking through the factory assembly manual, Section 0, sheet 8.00 shows RPO 267 auxiliary springs for the 3800, 3900, 4100 ...
That's what's on my 1 ton, no idea how it got on yours!
