Joined: Oct 2005 Posts: 4,168 | BTW, back when the water pump when out, I was sold a wrong rotation pump. Had over heating problems going to one of the events. Changed the pump there. Solved the problem. That there is the explanation on the trans over heat comment. I think all is good now in the cooling area of things but it sure wouldn't hurt to add that trans cooler. Joined: Oct 2005 Posts: 4,168 | So, when the water pump was giving me fits, he motor would cook and the trans would boil over dumping trans fluid on the exhaust. Luckily, no fires. I do have a small extinguisher bolted in the back. When I was at the races, I fixed the water pump and have had no overheating problems since. However, while driving back home from the races, I hit the pass at 70+. Uphill it was booking and the motor stayed cool, but the trans got a little hot. It, again, pushed a little oil out the dip stick tube. I slowed down a bit, things cooled down and I had no problems the rest of the way home. Well, it was, literally, down hill the rest of the way. So, one of the projects I needed to do next was a trans cooler in addition to what is already plumbed through the radiator. Enjoy the pics. The last picture shows the old connection to the radiator with the new connection to the cooler. The choice was make it look pretty or make it service-able. I went with service-able. It doesn't help that my tube of black was no longer effective. Luckily, my tube of yellow was up to the task. Tried something different. Tried to mask of the area that I didn't want to have glue get on. Worked reasonably well. Except for installing the windows, I'm about done with the back doors. The paint and body work turned out the way I wanted on the inside. The exterior could use a little more smoothing. I did a temporary fix for the everlasting drooping handle. I ground off about 3/16" from the tip and coated the raw end with some silver paint. Now it clears the door panel. I've fitted the window rubber, now I just need to superglue the ends together. When I removed the tail light at the beginning of the project, I yanked a wire out of the socket, so that needed repair. I soldered a new contact to the offending wire. Then did the same to the good wire so both would match height wise inside the socket. Car show season is upon me. I definitely have push truck duty in June and at the end of September. In fact, I was supposed to take it for push car duty on May 4, 5 and 6 in Tucson but plans changed and I will be hauling a really nice shoebox Ferd for a friend. I also want to drive it as the weather is nice. But that roof and the hood are calling to me!! They both want to be ground down and coated with that nice Southern Polyurethane Epoxy Primer!! I also cut a 1/4" off my rear door handle and shot it with some chrome paint. Heck, you never see the end anyway! The handle was so close without cutting it. Joined: Oct 2005 Posts: 4,168 | Replaced the drivers cargo door bumper and took one of my old side handles, applied Alvin's Tech Tip, and converted it to make a non-droopy cargo door handle. Instead of a grinder, I had a new toy to play with. A mill/drill. So I chucked in an end mill, made 4 flats, then took it to the final fitting with my die grinder and a sanding disc. With the new rubber, it rests on the sill. I haven't driven it yet to see if there are any less squeaks, but I like what I see.

So, as I've mentioned a few times, I use the Suburban to push a vintage dragster around. It's a show thing. When the push board wasn't there, the attachment looked like ugly bull horns and was a shin beater if you weren't watching where you were going. So, I decided some time ago to move the receiver behind the front bumper. I still have a little more work to do, but the picture tell the story. After June, since I have a couple of shows to attend, I will again remove the bumper and pieces to take to have chromed. Aligned the hood and closed up the gaps between hood and fender. I think my drivers inner fender is a '54 as that's what a previous owner put on the truck for a replacement fender. I changed to a proper fender long ago. Holes didn't line up whatsoever at the grill. Made new holes. Bolted the fender through the inner fender to the grill. It's amazing how many squeaks go away when you do that. I still need to replace the drivers outer cowl panel along with the inner to outer piece. But that will come much later. I have another show or two next weekend. Then I can put the thing back in the shop and start grinding and smoothing the roof. I'll need it ready for another show or two in September. Plans are to spend a couple of summer months getting the roof in epoxy primer and, hopefully, even the hood and front fenders!
