I was told by a friend to never paint a transmission. Understandable for an auto, they need all the cooling they can get, but I don't feel like the sm420 really needs it. I want to put on a thick (~3 mils) layer of epoxy paint, Would I be fine, or should I install some heat sinks? | | | | | Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 10,308 Renaissance Man | | Renaissance Man Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 10,308 | Are you going to disassemble the transmission? In order for any paint to stick to it, it will need to be spotlessly clean of gear oil. An assembled transmission will be seeping gear oil somewhere.

I can't imagine a situation where a bare case could do enough cooling to make a major difference in internal temperature. Jerry

The transmission has already been put into service, and the only leak came from a half hearted reassembly on the PTO, which will be corrected, and the epoxy will be dry before it is run again. The prep is sound, I just wasn't sure I'll be wrecking the transmission by painting it. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,878 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,878 | Wear some heavy duty rubber gloves when using the MEK. I got a nasty case of contact dertmatitis from that stuff a few years ago. It totally dehydrates skin. I ended up with deep, painful cracks in all my knuckles that took weeks to heal. Jerry

Is there a part number I can look up for it? | | | | | Joined: Feb 2016 Posts: 114 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Feb 2016 Posts: 114 | Thank you! it even has the retaining pin, mine was held purely by dirt. One last thing, and I'll get out of your hair. I got a PTO I cannot ID. The model was conveniently never stamped on it. https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B6Aw4aYru4MTaFluVE9la1hHUU0GED0202 and 203. Really need to reorganize that. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2011 Posts: 5,096 Crusing in the Passing Lane | | Crusing in the Passing Lane Joined: Jun 2011 Posts: 5,096 | I usually paint my trans' with Al paint, makes it easier to find leaks, breaks(rare) and easier to search around in there with a light.

I attempted to contact the company (they were bought out by Parker), and they were of little help. I sourced generic bushings and seals for mine. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2016 Posts: 114 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Feb 2016 Posts: 114 | I like the idea of Al paint, but this epoxy stuff is really strong. The only time I ever saw it come off a beam, was when the steel underneath peeled off. I can't think of a better guard against salt and rocks than a thin coating of essentially JB Weld with a nice color to it. I think I'll try the Al on some of my tractors, though, be a good look for them.
I figured the PTO was a long shot, but I thought I'd ask anyway. Thanks. | | |
