I am rebuilding the drivetrain on my 58 viking, and I intend to paint all of the components. I was told by a friend to never paint a transmission. Understandable for an auto, they need all the cooling they can get, but I don't feel like the sm420 really needs it. I want to put on a thick (~3 mils) layer of epoxy paint, Would I be fine, or should I install some heat sinks?

Are you going to disassemble the transmission? In order for any paint to stick to it, it will need to be spotlessly clean of gear oil. An assembled transmission will be seeping gear oil somewhere.

At the very least, steam clean or pressure wash the box before you do any painting. I can't imagine a situation where a bare case could do enough cooling to make a major difference in internal temperature.

I'll be wire brushing the dirt off, then using MEK solvent to remove oil. The transmission has already been put into service, and the only leak came from a half hearted reassembly on the PTO, which will be corrected, and the epoxy will be dry before it is run again. The prep is sound, I just wasn't sure I'll be wrecking the transmission by painting it.

Wear some heavy duty rubber gloves when using the MEK. I got a nasty case of contact dertmatitis from that stuff a few years ago. It totally dehydrates skin. I ended up with deep, painful cracks in all my knuckles that took weeks to heal.

I also damaged the eccentric that the reverse arm pivots on, I'd like to replace that since the trans is under work. Is there a part number I can look up for it?

You are in luck . There is a SM 420

Reverse shifter lever kit available on ebay

right now . It's $14.00 or make an offer .

It's being sold by ebay seller: Iowa bowtie .

The eccentric is GM # 591950 , I doubt you

will find this part separately.

The complete kit is GM # 3704888 .

Go to ebay & type in the search box.....3704888 .

I painted my SM 420 trans with this paint . It still

looks great .

Thank you! it even has the retaining pin, mine was held purely by dirt.

One last thing, and I'll get out of your hair. I got a PTO I cannot ID. The model was conveniently never stamped on it.

I usually paint my trans' with Al paint, makes it easier to find leaks, breaks(rare) and easier to search around in there with a light.

I have an old Chelsea PTO, but different than the one you have. I attempted to contact the company (they were bought out by Parker), and they were of little help. I sourced generic bushings and seals for mine.

I like the idea of Al paint, but this epoxy stuff is really strong. The only time I ever saw it come off a beam, was when the steel underneath peeled off. I can't think of a better guard against salt and rocks than a thin coating of essentially JB Weld with a nice color to it. I think I'll try the Al on some of my tractors, though, be a good look for them.

I figured the PTO was a long shot, but I thought I'd ask anyway. Thanks.
