One my trucks has a generic keyed starter switch with an old fashion starter button next to it. You turn the key to start and then hit the button. I of course un-did without writing down/ photo how it was done. What wire comes off the key (or from which port) to the button and where does hot wire from starter button go? The starter cylinoid? The coil? Thanks.

starter solenoid goes thru the start button to the output side of the switch. The coil wire goes to the output side of the switch, unless you are installing a hidden kill switch which then goes between the coil and the ignition switch.

It sounds like the wiring you are describing is how a
1954 Chevrolet truck with a hydramatic transmission is wired.
Here is the Wiring Diagram (To zoom diagram click on magnifying glass with plus sign)
The dashed lines are what you want to look at.
The dashed lines go to the,
Push button switch
Neutral safety switch (You might not have one)
Solenoid
Ammeter

The ignition switch wires:
One comes from ammeter.
One goes to the coil.

What year make model is your truck?

1954 Passenger car wiring diagram it has the same wiring but without Neutral safety switch.

Thanks to you both. The truck is a 1995 Ford, the black sheep of the family. It's siblings are a 38 Chevy 1/2 ton, a 46 3/4 ton and a 72 k5

Way to sneak a FORD question into a CHEVY site. Drawn & Quartered, burned at the stake what shall be the punishment?

I plead for mercy on my soul. I need to sell it to pay for the restorations on the Chevys.

They did that because the rack in the column broke and they didn't want to take the column apart to fix it.

Really isn't a hard job, but eventually you won't be able to turn it on or off if you (or whoever buys it) doesn't fix that rack.

Takes about 45 minutes to do the repair.
