I've seen that type of thing before. Overtorque can twist a tube type prop shaft just like that.
The instance I saw was on an M151 jeep that the GI driving it kept in 4WD on dry pavement. Made about 50 miles into a convoy trip and it finally twisted up. Looked just like a noodle. We just took it off and he made the rest of the trip in front wheel drive.

I saw a 4" diameter driveshaft out of a single-drive Peterbilt with a 425 Cat in it that looked like an hourglass. The rig was hooked up to a set of double grain trailers and stuck in a muddy field, and when the driver revved it up and dumped the clutch it made 4 full turns of the driveshaft before the slip yoke pulled off the spline!
