I have 1954 Chevy 3600 3/4 ton truck. I need ring & pinion kit for my differential. It is factory parts. My factory engine changed. It is 265 cu inch V8 engine now. Transmission is manuel column 3 speed but I will do automatic column.Truck is very slow. I want to buy new ring & pinion kit.I want to destroy the sound on differential.
What is my factory ratio?
What is your suggestion for 265 cu v8 engine?

Your truck would have come from the factory with an Eaton HO52 rear end. The tallest gears available for that rear end are 4.10. They were available on 1967-72 Chevy trucks and are somewhat scarce. The only way to find them is to search salvage yards or to watch 'for sale' listings. (One listed for sale now in the swap meet section.) 1950 4100 - unrestored and driven weekly for almost no reason at all.

You could swap entire axle if you want. A 14 bolt dual rear from a "cab and chassis" truck is a good choice with single wheels installed. Some discussion in the tons of fun section about that swap.
Or as mentioned and explained in the tech tip 4.10 gears were at one time available for your original axle, and can still be found. | | | | Joined: Jan 2000 Posts: 2,074 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2000 Posts: 2,074 | I've also heard of swapping in a diff from a Ford Econoline, which I assume has many more ratio choices?? That would be the entire rear axle vs just the gears.

Joined: May 2005 Posts: 8,877 | The axle from a Ford van is most likely a Dana 60, not all of them will be the same width, I had one from a Ford van that was too wide. They do have ratio choices but changing gears in a Dana is not quite as easy as in a GM 14 bolt.
The 14 bolt has lots of ratios available even as fast as 3.21 and as slow as 5.38. Also reasonably easy to change gears and set them up, pinion with it's bearings and housing unbolt and slide right out the front. The 14 bolt from a Cab and Chassis GM truck in my experience are all nominally 62-63" wide, within an inch same as AD 3/4 and 1 ton trucks are. | | |
