Working on a 38 pickup project.
I need to replace a badly worn dovetail on my drivers door. Anybody ever done this, if so whats the best way to remove the old one? By the feel there seems to be a heavy plate inside the frame that this is attached to and I assume the plate is attached to the inside of the frame. The new dovetails come with holes that seem to line up with what look like weld depressions in the existing unit. My thought would be to grind the old off leaving as flat a surface as possible then plug weld the new in place.
Thoughts please.

First off sorry for the duplicate posts. When I went looking for the original it wasn't there and thought I had not hit the submit button before xing out (this has happened before ), so posted a again. After the second post I noticed the Mods message that he had put it in the doors specific area.
So after not getting any replies I fiddled with it and decided that drilling might be best. I found a 1/2" bit in my drill drawer that had a low pitch. It worked great drilling down to the bottom of the spot weld depressions I was able to pry the old pieces off leaving very little sticking up. I'll no doubt need to clean it up a little but will wait till the new dovetail arrives, the holes in the new one maybe big enough to go over the nubs left behind. I'll see if I can manage to post some pics for future reference with before and after once I'm done.

Thanks Tim, ya I know, It just took me a while to notice the little blinking triangle next to "my stuff" at the top. As I said I've neglected to hit the submit button a number of times in the past and the mods on the other forums I belong to very rarely move stuff so just figured I'd "done it again". Just another one of the problems of being an old retired fart that's not overly computer savvy.

Well it took quite a while but looks like it worked, don't know if PB is really slow or its my cumputer/internet supplier.
Neglected to take a pic before I took it apart but the first pic is what it looked like after removal. So badly worn it came off in two pieces. Ended up drilling holes in new one out to sit over spot weld stubs. Other wise it was an easy job, probably took about 20 mins. all totaled.
