The engine block in my '51 is a 235 1956 Powerglide 0370817F56Y and a block casting number of 3837004 with a head from a 1953 Low pressure 235, head casting number 3701887. Are the two compatible? It runs rough and I'm trying to determine whether its fuel, spark, rocker adjustment or just parts that really don't work well together. | | | | | Joined: May 2005 Posts: 1,624 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: May 2005 Posts: 1,624 | I think you need to look for your rough running condition. I believe your head is rare and from a car with a automatic tranny and fully compatible with your block. Just what I've heard and could be wrong.

3701887 was supposedly the casting code on 1953 truck 235 (low pressure engine). Supposedly it worked with 15 head bolts. This information could be incorrect.
3701481 was the casting code on a 1953 car with Powerglide (high-pressure engine). It worked with 18 head bolts.
Maybe the all 1953 235 heads used 18 bolts - on both high-pressure and low-pressure oil system engines? | | | | | Joined: Jan 2001 Posts: 5,337 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2001 Posts: 5,337 | All 235 heads whether splash or full pressure in 1953 are the same.
The 1953 head will fit the 1954-62 engine,but will not have the holes for the four bolt valve cover.
I have used the 1953 head on later engines many times.
