Mike B | | | | Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,061 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,061 | Hy 57 Apache Stock, I have a very limited supply of true American parts books, and I would never argue with Mike B, but here is some information I found in an American Chevrolet parts book which covers 1955 (second series) to 1960 2 & 2 1/2 ton trucks. "*Note: Numbered in sequence commencing with 1001. Engines are now stamped with a source, production date and type on serial number pad." Example:F104 (F) (1) (04) (N) Plant Month Day Standard 8 cyl."283" Flint January Fourth Series 5000 I have no idea if the code letter "N" is the same for a 1957 3100 V8 or not. Just as a side note 1957 Canadian Chevrolet half tons (1300) did have 283 engines in them. Hope that helps some. | | | | Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 6,189 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 6,189 | You're right 3B, the "N" sufix would indicate the standard 283 V8 was fitted into a 5000 Series truck. In 1957 the 283 was the big motor for the year and wasn't advertised as being available in the 3100 series trucks, they would have gotten the 265 V8. If Chevrolet did majically put a 283 in a 3100, they didn't publish what sufix code they used. The 283 was available in the 1958 3000 series trucks as the new 348 was now the new big motor. In 57 the 55 and 56 265's were outrunning the bigger engine cars. All of them, 265 and 283 suffered from a bad piston design that caused the Invar anti-expansion struts to break away from the piston skirts. I've seen as many as 4 or 5 cracked OEM pistons in a single engine. Jerry
