Well, looking into front disc brake conversion kits. Finally sat down and started to read each parts shop catalog.

I ran across a statement in the Brothers Truck Parts catalog and it said that their disc brake conversion kit (booster under the cab, rotors, calipers, etc.) does not work on manual transmission trucks...

Anyone ever run into that? We have a manual trans truck and would like to install a front power disc brake conversion, and hopefully under the cab just to keep the engine bay clean.

This site covers trucks from the '20s to the '70s. They are not all the same. It's best to tell what model you are referring to.

Whoops, my fault.

This is in regards to the '52 we're working with.

I would assume that the under floor brake booster would be the culprit. With your manual, the clutch pedal would likely "be in the way" of the brake boaster and you would have to heavily modify the clutch pedal to make it work with the booster. I haven't done this install but am curious as I may be doing it down the road in my 1/2 ton as well.

I installed the POL kit in my '54 with 3 speed manual and OD with no fitment problems.

Thanks fellas. Those pictures sure cleared that up. It sits well back from the pedals. No problem...but that is down the road for me. 😉

Has anyone gone disc and used a manual master cyl setup? For my own reasons, I wish to avoid using a booster...

Norcal Dave,

Where in Nor Cal are you? There is a great brake supply company in Santa Rosa. It's 2 brothers who inherited their dad's business.

No matter if I go in looking for restoration brake parts, street rod brake parts, daily driver brake parts or even a replacement axle and brakes for my travel trailer they either have or get what I need.

Regarding your unboosted disc question, my '32 Ford roadster street rod has that setup using GM "metric" calipers and Aspen/Volare rotors mounted on a Ford beam axle. Braking was lousy with the "organic" friction that is out there now. The local brake guys got me some asbestos pads and shoes and it was like adding a booster, no exaggeration. The pedal effort is kind of high with no booster but I don't mind that.

Yes I have disc with manual master cylinder. I used a 1 inch master cylinder. I also used residual valves for both the disc front and the shoe rear.

I'm in El Dorado County. I've got a friend in Santa Rosa though- what's the name of the business?

Wayne, how does the pedal pressure feel on your setup?

I didn't plan on running 4 wheel discs, but the rear end I am using is fitted with them so that's how it's going to be. I was figuring that I would need a 7/8" master to keep pedal pressures in a comfortable range...

I have a good firm pedal but not so much I have to stand on it. I'm used to driving a non power brake car, my Mustang is also.

I used a 1 inch so I would have a little more volume of fluid being pushed to the brakes. It also shortens the stroke of the pedal.
