I have a NOS Maroon Shift Knob. It appears that it is going to be a very tight fit, onto the end of the column shifter. I think that I remember this subject being talked about before. However, I searched back a year, and couldn't find any reference to it. Has anybody had success, installing a 60 year old plastic knob, onto the column shift? My first thought, is to boil it in water. Hopefully, making it just pliable enough to slide onto the shift lever. Has anybody tried this? Or, is there a sure fire way to install it, without damaging the knob? Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

After using a modest amount of heat, with no success, I decided to try drill out the hole larger. I happened to have just the right size drill bit. I slowly drilled the center hole of the knob out. I was able to slide the it about half way down the slined end of the shift lever. The last half, I had to pound the end with the palm of my hand, until the knob had completely covered the spline end of the shift lever. Seems to have worked very nicely. Hope this information will help another bolter someday.
Thanks, Rugo

For a while I have been thinking of having my column shift lever chrome plated and wondered about how the process of pulling off the knob and if I would be able to press it back on afterward. Thanks for your insight.
