There are two Chevy trucks on my local CL. A C60 and a 88 C 70, one with a 366 and the other a 427 both 5 speeds. Are these 5 speeds with an OD 5th gears or do the have a low and super low first? Would they bolt up to a early 50s. 235 bell housing ??? Thanks much

Hy Mcatt, we would need to know the tag numbers from the tags on the transmissions, there were transmission options and different transmissions were used behind different engines. The transmissions could be either overdrive or direct drive it is impossible to tell without the tag numbers.

Ok I can come up with those if they're still there. I guess the first question should be will they bolt to a later 235 bell housing?? Trying to get more mph in my 1 1/2 ton four speed. If they won't bolt up its a moot point

Possibly OD but uncommon, tag/model info will help or make of transmission and shift pattern can help determine if OD or not.

Some might bolt in place of an SM420... except from a medium duty truck probably has longer larger input shaft. Larger is OK, you can get a clutch disc to work. Longer is troublesome, easiest is an adapter which might be handy anyhow to adapt likely different pilot diameter in bellhousing, and could possibly deal with adapting bolt pattern if an issue.

It may or may not be easy but likely possible to swap transmissions either way depending on how resourceful you are.

First find out what transmission and if worth swapping.

Don't know what 235 bell housing you are trying to mate too, but there were 1940's vintage Clark 5 speed over drive transmissions that swapped in the non-synchronized Chevy 4 speed bell housing.

My gut says that something from 1988 will not work.

I think the Clark over-drive 5-speed was a 205-V0 or a 207-V0

They were non-synchronized, as posted by Paul_WNC. I have two (205-VOs, I think) - poste your casting codes and I will check.

Even the ones with the SAE-style round front housing can be adapted to a stovebolt engine with a special bellhousing, but those adapters are scarce as a chicken with lips. Clark, Spicer, and New Process all made 5 speeds in direct and OD top gear configurations, but they weren't used in rigs much below 2-ton size.

Get the shift pattern, if the ball is there. NP have Al top covers with 4 shift rails, Clark Al top covers in some, have an 'o' in their MN as above, most all have an 'o' in the MN. Retainer dia might be larger than 3 or 4 speed, bore bellhousing out. There are short(like most 3 speeds) and long input shafts, 10" or so, for 14" clutch, so if one gets long one, better get the whole assembly.

There is a factory GM adapter that puts a small block on a 14" clutch assembly, consists of 1/4" plate to register and bellhousing, I have one if you need px.

One of the problems is OD is gotten by taking 3rd. gear position, so, if one has a load, no two speed axle, then you are stuck in 2nd 'til top of hill.
