If it's a 55 first series it's a pretty easy process. DO NOT disassemble the whole front end as it comes off in one big piece if you want it to. It is a lot more work, messier, parts misplaced and if you want/need to throw the clip back on to check room/ clearance you'll be glad it's in one piece.
1. Remove hood and bumper. For the sake of room and bonked knees.
2. Disconnect all wiring from the front clip. Label all ends, roll it up and zip tie to the firewall somewhere out of the way. Headlights, generator, park lights, etc.
3. Remove fender brace rods from firewall and fenders.
4.Drain coolant and disconnect hoses.
5. Remove radiator support bolts. These bolt down the radiator support to the front crossmember. Should be 2 of them, but many of these old trucks were "farmered" and may have more than 2 after years of abuse.
6. Remove 5/16" bolts that hold the inner fenders to the cab toeboard. 3 /side inside the cab under the mat on the toeboard.
7.Remove the 5/16 fender bolts that bolt the outside fenders to the cab. Up inside the outer fender. Don't unbolt inner and outer fenders from each other. I like to remove the wheels for this step and the next.
8. Get two buddies (and some cold ones to enjoy after this part). One person on the grill, the other two on the outside of the fenders. Lift slightly, pull forward, tilt nose down a bit, lift clear the back of fenders over wheels ( you'll be glad now that you removed the wheels!)
9. Place the front clip somewhere safe, high and dry to store until you need it.
This process can take as little as 30 mins if you have practiced wink
Good luck!
PS- I'm sure if I forgot something that the Bolters will let me know.
A Task force truck will be very similar... Most trucks are like this.

Here's a picture of me moving my front fender clip.

If it is an AD 55, you can remove the entire fenders/grill as an assembly. This assembly is referred to as "the dog house". This will save you a lot of headaches related to all of the grill fasteners (there are what seems like 57,000 screws/nuts/bolts which are nearly inaccessible).

First ..thank you for the response .I have a 2nd series 55 ... my brother ( who is more knowledgeable with this than I ) will be taking it apart this coming weekend and will try what you have suggested . I hope it is as easy as it sounds cause I have been bruising my knuckles trying to remove the grill . I have the bumper off already . if you can think of anything else that will aid in this effort please let me know\

thank you again...your input is greatly appreciated !!!!

It might be easier to take a Task Force front clip off one piece at a time. The grills are no where near as difficult to deal with.

If my memory is right you only have 8 bolts to remove.

(2) at the top rear of both fenders.
(2) at the lower rear of both fenders.
(2) at the lower rear of both inner fenders.
(2) at the radiator support going through the frame stand off brackets.

Double check my memory, there could be a fender brace to the firewall at the rear of the wheel opening...

Don't forget to disconnect the wiring harness first.

Two men can lift it off, but it's better to have three!

That's it...if the bolts come out easy it's only 20-30 minutes worth of work.

Good luck!

I've done the above steps on a 50, 53, 69,79 and 86. The whole front of a truck should come off fairly easily.

as I said I am removing the front end to get front end work done on the truck. I have been toying with the idea of a Mustang II setup ( Fat Man) with disc brakes and power steering . I am also going to upgrade to a new V8 motor and transmission . I have read a lot of posts about the Mustang II setup and I am not sure spending 2k is what I need to do . Can I put disc brakes and power steering in the truck with a new motor and keep the straight axel front end ....

any advice here would be greatly appreciated

There are companies that sell both, the disc setup and the power steering set up. Look at some of the after market adds in the truck magazines. There is nothing wrong with the straight axle so long as you have good spring bushings and the king pin bushings are in good shape. All of the Big trucks on the highway have a straight axle, if it's good enough for them, it's certainly good enough for all of our little trucks.

Does anyone have pictures documenting this evolution? It would make a good tech tip.
