OK Guys, here is my dilemma. I currently have a 1948 3600 with a 1970ish 250-6. Fenton split headers and glass pacs running all the way out the back. I have been running this set up for about 6 years. I use a wireless bluetooth speaker to run some tunes and have to run full volume to really enjoy the music over running about 2500 rpms with the windows up. Would quieter mufflers make a discernible difference? It is really tough to tell if the overall noise is from the exhaust, or other road noise.
I do have some bubble/foil type insulation under the rubber mat, also running up to just below the back glass, behind the door covers and under the headliner.

What say y'all.

Quite mufflers help. Had to replace exhaust system/pipes on my 52 once, thought the old muffler was OK, original design/shape muffler. The new one looked about the same as the old but was much quieter in the cab, it was nice.

I thought those mufflers were designed to be quiet at first and then once the insides burn out they are quite loud .like the old thrush mufflers pass the noise laws but once used for a while they are like straight pipe. Real mufflers should keep things quiet.

..and a lot of it depends on where your exhaust pipe is pointing. Is it in front of the tire, coming out behind the tire, or straight out the back?? It all plays a part.

I have generic glaspacs on my Suburban with Fentons. They were installed close to the front with a bunch of open pipe to the back. They were obnoxious. I installed a pair of Walker resonators close to the rear. It still has that mellow glaspac sound running through the gears but once I get into high it is relatively quiet.

Cletis, was/is your glas-paks a one piece steel tubing blown to shape as if a glass blower had done it with one piece? Or is it sheet metal on the outside?

One piece steel tubes.

I have a mild 350 and was thinking about running a pair of stock style 216/235 mufflers. Anyone out there done this?
I can't hear my 235 running at all at idle with this muffler, and exhaust note is pretty quiet when going down the road. I was hoping for similar results with dual exhaust using the same mufflers.

The 350 in my '56 is relatively quiet using the same generic glaspacs I have on the '54. Something about the V8 makes the exhaust notes smoother than the split manifold six.

I would guess that some noise cancellation is going on in the collectors of each side of V8 which cannot be duplicated with the Stovebolt 6 due to the shared exhaust ports of the 2-3 and the 4-6 cylinders which limits how one can split the manifold.
If you have the opportunity of hearing a V8 with pipes coming straight out of each exhaust port at wide open throttle, you will find it just as annoying (or awesome, depending on your personal taste) as a split Stovebolt exhaust.
BTW, thanks for sharing your satisfaction with straight through glasspacs. It gives me the confidence to go with the stock straight through mufflers on my 350.
