Can some one help me know what badge ought to be on the 49' Chev 3808? Would it be Thriftmaster, or 3800, for the side emblems?

thadley,

It looks like there was a change in the hood side badge in 1949. This information was compiled from a variety of sources.

Actually, on the side of the hood on 49 ADs there should be two emblems, the word Chevrolet (with no Thriftmaster) and then the series number (3800 in your case) below that. Here's a link to a page on my website on AD emblems .

No, if it's a 49, 50, or 51, it should have a badge saying Chevrolet and a badge with the number 3800 below it.

Quoting from my web page:
Quote
The 1949 thru 1951 models used two side emblems, Chevrolet above and the model number (i.e. 3100 for 1/2 ton, 3600 for 3/4 ton, etc.) below.

Early 1949:

- As in '47 and '48, on Chevrolet light trucks chrome hood side emblem states THRIFTMASTER. Large truck side hood emblem states LOADMASTER.

- Series designation emblems also on side of hood; 3100 on 1/2 ton, 3600 on 3/4 ton, 3800 on 1 ton, etc.

Late 1949:

- Hood side emblem says CHEVROLET, no longer says THRIFTMASTER/LOADMASTER

- Series designation emblems also on side of hood; 3100 on 1/2 ton, 3600 on 3/4 ton, 3800 on 1 ton, etc.

Good catch, Tim. We often find that some of the small changes in model years did not take place until partway through the model year. On the same topic of emblems, officially, in 1952 Chevy dropped the series number and just used the Chevrolet badge. However, when I was putting this page together, I had emails from several folks who had late 1951 trucks that were bone-stock original that had just the Chevrolet badge and no holes for the series number.

While we're on the subject... Where can a person find 3600 hood badges? I've looked in every catalog and it's always only 3100.

Hey Jeff, that point made about no holes for the series is exactly like my 49'. Only two holes on either side of hood, holes are about six inches apart in alignment horizontally.

The 6"-on-center holes would be for the "CHEVROLET" emblem.

I'm wondering when the division was between "early" and "late" '49 as relates to the addition of the series number. The '49 Engineering Features booklet, originally printed on 1/31/49, mentions the addition of the series number plates. The '49 specs from the resto pack, printed 5/16/49, show the number plates ( see here ). The '49 data book, printed 7/1/49, also shows the number plates.

Thadley's truck was produced in July of '49 (he posted the serial number in another thread a while back). I'd think it would/should have had the series number plate, but I guess the hood with no other holes doesn't lie (unless it's not the original hood). Perhaps some assembly plants didn't bother with them.

I'm with you Curt, so that seems to me the way I'll go, or maybe with some luck this weekend here in the Phoenix area, at the Good Guys car show and swapmeet I'll find something.
