I notice a clicking noise when I push in the clutch and coast slowly in second gear. Example: slow down to stop at the end of the driveway, push in on the clutch; it clicks about twice per second then will slow to nothing when I stop. Now, it is important to note that if I pop it out of gear while I'm rolling the noise stops completely,(clutch in or clutch out, no noise). Everything sounds fine when accelerating. I'm looking for ideas. I can't get my helper to hang underneath and listen; not that she would know what to listen to! It is not a violent noise and I'm not too concerned, but I would like to have an idea what might be causing it. Does it only do it in first gear? Sounds like it is in the tranny.

Joker, I've put about 300 miles on it over the last year I have owned it and it's always made the noise. I don't think it's driveshaft, reason as follows: with the clutch in, the input end of the tranny stops rotating, but I still have noise (the driveshaft makes the tranny still turn). When out of gear, some portion of the trans stops turning and it stops the noise ... but the driveshaft is still rotating (with no noise). When you unload the drive shaft it no longer binds the bearings. You check the U joints you need to chock the truck, release the parking brake and put the trans in neutral. Then slide under the truck and see if there is any up and down or side to side play at the U joints. I'd make a guess it's the cluster gear needle bearings. You could try dropping the cover plate off where a PTO would mount, and see if there's any end shake or up and down play in the cluster gear.

Worn counter shaft roller bearings that only made noise under load. This was a grinding noise, not clicking. They were quite when I pushed the clutch in and took off the load or coasted downhill. Nice in the sense that one gets a heads-up something is wrong before trany stops working all together. | | |
