I just purchased a second, original 3 speed overdrive for my '57. It's been a while since I've messed with one of these so I'm a bit rusty. The neutral arm that would attach to the cable under the dash seems to be stuck. I remember this being free at all times, but on this one it's seized. What would cause this? I've tried shifting the trans shifting levers into every position I can imagine. I have not yet had the case apart.

Thanks,

With the transmission out of the car, the engagement lever will usually only be able to move if the transmission is held in the upright position as it would normally be installed in the vehicle.
If it is in any other position the shift pawl will move into the blocker ring and prevent the shifter shaft from moving. It's probably OK. There is also a rare possibility that the solenoid is stuck in the engaged position.
Fred

Also, that lever is not a neutral or a freewheel control.
With it pulled foreward the OD is locked out and the transmission acts as a regular 3 speed.
With it retracted to the rear it allows the OD engagement along with the electrical components.

That was exactly the problem. I had the transmission upside down and that caused exactly what you said. Thank you very much for the reply. It worked fine once flipped right side up. That's a load off.

You're correct about the cable. I didn't do a very good job of describing it. In my mind, the reason a person disengages the overdrive in many areas here would be because of the hills, because in overdrive the engine freewheels under 28 mph when it is engaged, so in my mind the disengaging of the overdrive is connected to the disconnecting of the freewheeling function of the overdrive, but I realize isn't a real correlation or good way to describe what I meant.

Thanks,
Brandon
