I looked at a 67 chevy pickup yesterday that has a factory 3 sp OD transmission. I don't know the details but the transmission has problems. The OD has been disconnected for some time and the current owner has been driving without the OD. It was that way when he bought it. I have access to a '64 chevy OD transmission which, if I remember correctly, is a different animal. My questions; are any of the OD specific parts interchangeable? Can the '64 transmission replace the '67 transmission without any major modifications? I haven't made a decision on buying the truck yet and I just want to know what my options are. Thanks for any advice.

There are some major differences between the two OD transmissions. None of the external components, gears, or shafts interchange. It's possible some of the internal BW parts interchange.
The later unit is a full syncro Saganaw. The main physical differences are the side cover and the output shaft splines.
Both are similar in length, perhaps only 1/2" overall differences. The early trans will bolt up to the bellhousing. Most of the early units had a 16 spline output shaft, some of the later versions had the 28 spline output which would be the same as the Saganaw.
They have a completely different side covers it terms of spacing and shifter arms. That could possibly be overcome as some of the later transmissions have been modified to be used in earlier vehicles.
It could be somewhat expensive to rebuild the 67 trans but would likely be worth it. You also run the risk that the 64 trans is worn out also and needs to be rebuilt.

Thanks Fred. After sleeping on it I think I'm going to let this one pass. Between the transmission and some rusty areas I think it's more work than I have time for right now. Thanks for the info.

Something I forgot to mention. If the transmission is working as a 3 speed and does not have any unusual noises or problems the OD portion may be OK also. Many OD problems are electrical and most operators don't know how to diagnose and or fix them. It may be worth taking another look at it and adjust the price accordingly.

The only other problem he mentioned about the transmission is that it sometimes pops out of 2nd gear. He has a floor shifter on it and when he drives it he just holds it until he shifts to 3rd.

I know an ol' boy in Fort Worth who can make it like new.
