The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Paint and Body Shop Which buffing compound?

I sprayed color on my '48 the other night,(PPG DAR acrylic enamel) I'm using a new gun that I'm not quite used to yet and I've got some moderate orange peal. I'm wondering what some of you have used with good results as far as buffing compounds. I haven't color sanded yet, I wanted to wait until I decided on a compound so I know what grit paper to go with. My paint supplier carries PPG and 3M compounds, I've used the PPG cutting compound, and polishing compounds in the past and they seem to work well. I usually follow that up with 3M Imperial Hand Glaze.

I'm open to new methods and products. What do you guys suggest?

I recently used some 3M, Super Duty Rubbing Compund on my Honda car after I sanded with 2000 grit. It worked well but left some swirls, which I expected. For a final buffing I use Kit, Scratch Out, which you can get at WalMart. It leaves a super, high-gloss, finish. Don't use a polish with silicone. It can cause lung cancer. YIKES! I'd rather have a dull truck.

I got some 3M Finesse It II this weekend, $35 a bottle, for that you should be able to drink the stuff, I sanded with 1000, then 1500, then buffed. Wow!! The stuff works, I guess that's why it costs so much. It's much better to work with than the PPG stuff. It looks as though I got all the swirl marks out also.

The 3M Super Duty is about half that price. The Kit, Scratch Out is comparable to any final buffing compound but is much cheaper and doesn't have all the scary health warnings.
