Hello - Can anyone direct me to the paint code I could use for getting a quart mixed to paint my 1962 - 261?

I'm not a rattle can guy.

Would this request be better placed in the "engine" forums?

Bill Hirsch auto paint may have some already mixed up. Good service from them in the past. Mike

Try to call/contact Bob Adler - he has an original yellow 261 engine (and, he is one of "the" experts on antique Chevrolet trucks).

I tried Bill Hirsch. They only carry an "Edsel/pacer" yellow. Bob Adler may be a good resource. I will see what he knows.

Daytona Yellow I think finding the elusive yellow is going to be a lot harder than finding the 'correct grey' for these old engines. There was a picture of an 'old yeller' around, seemed a bit deeper than my spray bomb. Since few have ever seen the original yellow it's all going to be a mystery.

I remember seeing Jack Halton's 302 GMC in Army green 20 years ago, great color, great engine. I do think that unless a vehicle is being judged by some impossible standard I'm going to choose a color that is in the spirit of the original and one that pleases me.

No judge knows the color code (and most judges have most likely never seen a yellow 261).

Tim, I've always enjoyed your views on paint codes and color, perhaps the cause is that it makes so much sense. The engines and vehicles were assembled in different locations, ergo, paint batches may or may not have been spot on from location to location. I don't think anyone of that time could have predicted the passion we have for these vehicles today.

Thanks Cosmo - Interesting take on color. I think I am going to go the Bill Hirsch engine enamel - "Edsel/Pacer" yellow. I can spray it out of my gun and be done with it. Unless I can get some codes on the "Daytona Yellow" you note there.

Hi Joe. The 261 engine most always was yellow or green.
My 1962 was green and I found a bolt under the generator that still had a good sample of that colour on it.
The paint girl at the local Home Hardware store scanned it with the spectrum analyzer and mixed up a quart of OIL BASED machine enamel.
It was spot on, I applied it with a small brush and it looks perfect. The engine heat did not bother it either.
You may want to try my method as it is fast and easy to get rather than waiting for a package. And inexpensive as well.
The big thing is that it is the correct colour!

Thanks to all for the suggestions. I think I am going to get a quart mixed up at my Sherwin Williams dealer. Try to closely match the Daytona yellow I see in these rattle cans.
