Hi all, I am getting ready to replace my rear motor mounts on my 1955 Chevy 2nd Series 3100 pick up with a 235 and 3 speed tranny. They are oil soaked mush and must go.

I'm ready to go, got the bolts broke lose, but am not sure where to lift the motor to get the clearance to remove the mounts. Last thing I want to do is break, bend, or crack a part. The engine and trans are still bolted together. The truck is up on jack stands supported at all for corners.

I've got a floor jack and a handy little bottle jack I can use. What would be the best way to raise the engine up and off of the rear cross member and rear mounts?

You should be able to get enough clearance by jacking the transmission.

Cool, thank you Cletis.

I'll grab some wood and my floor jack and push up on the tranny. I wasn't sure how strong the Trans Case is but sounds like she will hold.

Thank you very much for your advice. I'm going to tackle these motor mounts tomorrow morning...i'll let you know how it goes.

Put your jack as near the front of the tranny as you can. If you have the lower dust cover on, be sure not to get the block of wood on it, it will bend as you go up if you do.

Ok good to know, thank you Cablesmill!

I took the cover off earlier today. I wanted to have a good look at the clutch and gave a good cleaning while I was at it.

I've got some 2x6's in the yard that i'll use. The plan is to spread them across the trans as best as i can and then to lift he motor at the tranny as close to the bell housing as i can get it.

It only have to lift about 3/4 to an inch as i eyeball it so i'm hoping to be ok. I plan on getting at this in the morning after my coffee.

You can put all you want on that trans case. It is heavy cast iron. You wont break it. In fact it is safer to put the jack against the trans. instead of the wood block. The block can slip out.

Thanks to everybody that replied. Got the job done...just lifted the motor from the trans as suggested. Worked like a champ.

Those mounts were a bear to get bolted back in...I had a hard time getting the bellhousing bolt holes to line up on the cross member with the new mounts...had to fiddle with it for a long while but eventually got it done.

I've been experiencing some shuddering/vibration when taking off in first gear and in reverse. I pulled the dust cover and had a look at the clutch and it looks dry and has plenty of meat. I'm hoping that was due to those rear mounts being mushroomed out and oil soaked.

I guess i'll know pretty soon!
