Click on the "installation info" link at the top of the home page and scroll down to the angle strip instruction for your truck.

Factory original was spot welded to the bed side and does go above the wood to hold it down. The cross member supports the wood from underneath. I had to rebuild my bed and purchased new polished stainless angle strips. I did not want to discolor the SS by spot welding the new angle strips to the bed side.
