Hi, A friend of mine just acquired a 1954 Cabover chevy stake truck. We are looking to redo it and was wondering on the cab portion only, is the cab on a 1954 cabover stake truck (stub nose) the same as the cab on a 1954 pickup? We were wondering this when it came time to replace rusted parts instead of repairing them. The same for anything we chose to replace on the cab itself. Thanks

Welcome to Stovebolt.com, kidsinc1981,

GMC or Chevrolet?

My guess is the cabs are different (they are for GMCs).

At the least, the cab floors are significantly different.
The front fenders bolt to cab much differently.
The doors are different.

Some/many interior parts should be the same.

Spanky would know for both Chevrolets and GMCs.

As Tim said the cabs will be the same in all areas except the floor area, and the door area at the wheel arch. Everything else will interchange with the pickups.

Parts people won’t answer my question of which cab parts for pickups can be used on 2-ton cabs (at least not by email.) Searching these forums I found a few helps, but not much detail:

One poster: “Luckily enough, the big bolts share the same cabs as the 1/2-3/4 ton versions making the "general" stuff plenty available.”

Another poster: “At the least, the cab floors are significantly different.
The front fenders bolt to cab much differently.
The doors are different.
Some/many interior parts should be the same.”

And another: “the cabs will be the same in all areas except the floor area, and the door area at the wheel arch. Everything else will interchange with the pickups.”

I knew about the door area wheel arch (the hard way.) Are the doors themselves different? It would be nice if there were a list of items that one should NOT buy for their big bolt. The items I’d like to get for my 1954 2-ton are:

Rear window glass and rubber
Door rubber (glued on)
Lower door rubber retainer
Door windlace
Rubber weatherstrip under the door opening
Accelerator pedal and felt bushing for the rod
Brake and clutch pedal pads
Gearshift boot and pad
Starter pedal boot
Master cylinder floor hole cover
Headliner pieces
Possible others

Thanks for any thoughts or references to how to find out.

I believe everything you listed is interchangeable with the smaller trucks. If you will CALL Steele Rubber Products you can get answers to your questions that involve rubber. Sending emails usually gets you limited or no usable information with any suppliers.

All on your parts list are same for large and small trucks for each year of 48-53 and the similar but different 54.

Your quotes about cabs being the same and or different might be referencing different years, or COE vs. conventional.

For the 48-53, and 54 only the cabs are pretty much the same on all conventional trucks and pickups, so the available restoration parts are the same.

The front fenders, hood, and related parts are different between 1 ton (same as all smaller) and the larger and 1.5 ton (same as 2 ton). GMC front end will be different again for the 400 series and larger again is different yet. Nominally the same cabs as pickup for GMC up to 600 series, Though some small variations exist in firewalls like for diesel in 52/53.
In other words AD Chevy and GMC cabs and interior bits are pretty much the same and interchangeable from 1/2 ton trucks up to a huge GMC 600 series (excluding COE).

Carolina Clive,

You posts/questions "piggy-backed" on a different topic/truck/etc.

You will get better/quicker answers in the future by posting your own new questions.

Good luck with your restoration.

Some of us know quite a bit about the many nuances/differences between 47-53 and 1954/55st Chevrolet (and GMC) trucks. Please ask questions. Unlike "Parts People", you will get quick/many answers here (and, they are often correct - or, they get quickly corrected)

Thank you all so much! This is very helpful and encouraging.

And I am particularly thankful for the lesson on how the forums work. I wouldn't have thought that posting new questions would be preferred over continuing one that had similar interests. I have been admonished for "hijacking" an existing thread on an 8N tractor forum for the same reason. All learning curves are steep for the old and technologically challenged.

Clive, we all gotta learn as we go. New threads are always preferred unless responding with an answer to someone’s question or it is a current ongoing thread.
Browse around the site and see what fun you can get into. shake
