Getting to the final stages of my project and I am unsure whether the horns that were on my 1958 when I got it are original to the truck - Delco Remy models 755 and 756? Also unsure exactly where and how they mount, as it's been 6 years since I pulled it all apart! Assembly manual doesn't help as it shows 1955 and, if my horns are correct, the brackets changed over the years.

Any help would be much appreciated - thanks!

Horns;

1957-59

Left Side Lo Note...stamped 347

Accessory Right Side Hi Note...stamped 346

Do your horns have a sphire or cylinder shaped cover? The last year for the sphire was 1956.

The ones I have are snail shaped, with a large smooth dome on one side that contains a circular insert with two small holes.

Those could have been retro fitted.

Type S horns with the bracket bent at a 90 degree angle were new for 58, 59 bracket was completely straight, 60 was straight but had a small step close to the horn. These horns had a large triangular trumpet and were the first model riveted shut. Around 61/62 they went smaller still called Type S but now the trumpet was square.

IIRC the parts catalog says the same LO horn was standard equipment on all Chevy pickups(possibly trucks) from 58-62 or 64? They were using the older design after it was obsoleted:

http://www.delcoremy.com/find-a-part/product-details/9000347

Original location for the LO is on the drivers side second bolt down from top of radiator support. When I got my truck it had the original horn but I retrofitted a 4 note from a 70s Cadillac.

I believe the horn for 58 was Model #337 (LH) and #336 (RH).

The Accessories Installation Manual I have shows P/N 987695 for the kit for both horns. They are the ones that look like sea shells or trumpet.

I did a little more research and here's what I found...

1955/56 Left side Lo note #759 12v
1955/56 Right side Hi note #760 12v

1957 Left side Lo note #345
1957 Right side Hi note #346

1958 Left side Lo note #347
1958 Right side Hi note #348

Source;
1956-58 Heavy Duty Truck and Special Equipment Cataloge 3-1-58

Later parts books start combining years to reduce inventory (if it "fit"). A perfect example is my 1960 truck parts book shows #346 as being correct on ALL 57-59 Right side Hi note.

Again, as far as I know the Sphire/Dome cover was last used in 1956, the '57 horn is still a Sea Shell, but it has a cylinder type cover.

These horns were used in all of the GM cars and trucks with the only difference being the part number to ID the bracket.

Thanks Mike. My 59 has the 347 and my parts truck had the 347 too. It was my understanding that 58 would have the 337 and 338 horns. It would be nice if my accessories installation manuals showed the model #s

Rod,

My parts book shows 1959 used the #347 LO note, Left side and #346 HI note, Right side horns.

I wonder why they didn't re-use the 1958 Right side Hi note #348 in the 1959's ???

Good question Mike...I was under the impression the 346 was in '58's and 348's in '59's. I hope to get a response from GM to my question about the horns. I picked up a 326 horn I thought was in 57's, now I wonder what year it went in.

Rod,

Your #326 got me looking at Horns again...I found it, it's for the 1957 Passenger cars.

I also found in my "1956/1957 Chevrolet Heavy Duty Truck Parts Catalog and Dealer Price Schedule" dated March 1, 1957 lists the following:

1957 Left side Lo note #327
1957 Right side Hi note #328

So, was there a mid year change???

The March 1, 1958 Book has the 1957 trucks as using the 345/346 Horns. It also shows that the 1957 and 1959 trucks both used the #346 HI note (accessory right side horn) and that 1958 used the #348 Hi note (accessory right side horn). So why did they drop the 348 after one year???

That's interesting. I am confused as why the numbering seems to be out of sequence. So, what was the low note model used in 58? My mind says it should be a 337, but then my mind tells me things it probably shouldn't..LOL

Rod,

Where are you finding reference to 1958 horns being 336 & 337 ??? I've got 6 different parts books from 1956 to 1963 and those numbers are no where to be found...

My parts books do list 987695 as "HORN UNIT...1958 HI Note", but don't list what the stamped number would be...

What can you add?

Mike, I haven't seen any reference for the model #s. I was using logic that since the 57 used 327 and 328 numbers and 59 used 347, and I would think 348, that 58 would use 337 and 338. It seems they went in increments of 10 with each year.

I emailed GM for help with this question and I was sent PDF files of information on specs, but nothing about horn models. I'd like to find somebody that has a 58 and 59 with both horns and see what their model #s are.

you folks need to remember that GM was big on using what was on hand that worked, and that the various assembly plants might well have not had what was "spec", but did have "mismatched" leftovers, the primary changes were size to fit in the space [and prolly cheaper to make], and the mounting bracket to allow the 'trumpet' to aim at the louvers in the core support - waste not, want not

for a good instance, the 57-59 panel truck rear license light cover was identical to the 1939 car cover, including the unobtainium glass thimble inside - they must have had leftovers ... who'd a thunk grin
