Jacked the Panel up and put a new seal on the automatic tranny shifter arm and replaced a bad headlight switch. The NEW front drums have always been a suspect for being out of round so I pulled them off tonight and will get them turned in the morning. Replace the end on a battery cable and it also got a good lube job.

If the weather is decent I may drive it to Family Reunion in Ga. Sunday and drop by and see some of the guys at the Canton car show.....unless the little short lady "insist" on the Buick...but hey she rode in it to K.C.

Yesterday, I welded up the spring hangers and machined them to the correct size . This morning I finished assembling the rear and drove to the Kustoms breakfast, it is the 6th anniversary and about 450 cars etc showed up . Perfect weather , great day.

I put an adjustable main jet in the Suburban carburetor and checked the timing.

Replaced the brake master cyclinder, a cracked brake line, and bleed the brakes. Fixer the sloppy shifter, then took her on her first drive in over 20 years. Then got stranded when the fuel pump gave out....

You need to replace the rest of those brake lines.

Reinstalled the ring and pinion assembly after having the old pitted parts replaced. Also with new bearings and gaskets. Wow-talk about quieter! One of the best things I've ever done.

It's on the list although the brake lines are not that bad at all. The cracked line was from where someone had crushed it somehow.

You wont see the bad spots, both steel and rubber lines fail from the inside out...

Project fender bender got the rest of the front clip buttoned up.
I fitted/wrestled the grill, bumper mounts,splash apron and bumper into place.

All going well I should be rolling again this week! yahoo

A shade over 4 months of Stovebolt driving abstinence is not good for the soul.....

Cleaned up the loose rust and treated the back half of the frame (bed is off) with a rust convertor. I also replaced the shocks while I had easy access and replaced the rubber brake line at the back axel. I am so close to starting my bed build.

today, I charged the battery and fired up my 65 suburban. I then drove it out of the weeds and into my yard to assess what it needs to be on the road again. It needed brakes and carb when i quit driving it in 1992.

I bought the truck valentines day 1969 w/22,000 miles on it. I'm the second owner.
For twenty-five years it was the only vehicle i owned, it was my work truck, grocery getter, RV,stump puller etc. I even lived in it for awhile.

when i was younger i put up with manual brakes and manual steering and clutch. I think now at the age of 67 i might consider power steering ,power disc brakes and auto trans.

I'm off to dig up my shop manuals that have been packed away, i hope to be back with word that another old burb is on the road.
Jerry.

I rebuilt the master cylinder. The steel lines were rusted solid to the connector nut. The only way to get them loose was to cut the lines. Now I am planning a trip to the parts store for some new steel brake lines.

Tried to fit the last piece in the jigsaw that is/was "Project fender bender" last night and conceded defeat.

The right rear fender.

I was trying to tighten the fender bolts and I realised even at 6'4" my arms just aren't quite long enough to reach inside the bed whilst tightening the nuts underneath and fit the fender seal at the same time.
My able assistant a.k.a. "Da Boss" has been pressed into action and will provide much needed help this morning,then it's road test time.
I still need to address a little header leak then it's all systems GO! (I hope)

I added some more shims on the torque tube ball, might stop leaking...

1953 panel,

Adding shims will most likely loosen the "joint"?
That might result in increased leaking?

I put the current license tag on and put the insurance card in the glovebox. Then I got out the rubbing compound and did the whole truck, it had black mold spots and small scaly lichen type things all over, it sure looks better, wax tomorrow!

A 350 is a 2 ton GMC. I think a 27 is a 270 engine.

1953 panel is correct:

350 indicates 2-ton
35x-27 = 270 engine
35x-24 = 248 engine

351 = 2 ton with 137" wheelbase
352 = 2 ton with 149" wheelbase
353 = 2 ton with 161" wheelbase
354 = 2 ton with 179" wheelbase
355 = 2 ton with 199" wheelbase

Super cool trucks, AdamK!
Thanks for explaining, Tim & 53panel; initially, I thought it was a 'rod engine.

Went over the whole truck's existing paint with rubbing compound, then with polishing compound, then with wax then buffed it off. Of course, it didn't fix any dents or scratches, but it sure looks a heckuva lot better! It sparkles in the sunlight instead of just absorbing the light like flat-finished paint.

After reading such great progress being made on some very cool trucks, I hesitate to say this ... but I just listed one of my trucks for sale. Oh well, it's time to narrow down my projects to a semi-manageable amount.

I then went and sat on the bed of the '37 truck (the one I'm keeping), dreamed a bit of possibly starting it up and driving it in the town parade some year. It was a beautiful day, sunny and bright. A good day to dream of what can someday be.

Given up trying to seal the cheap generic block hugger headers on my '50,the mounting flanges are simply too thin and as a consequence have warped.
I've since scored a set of good ole cast iron ramshorns from a friend and ordered yet another pair of gaskets.
As an added bonus it looks like i'll have gained some extra steering clearance too.
I also fully lubed all the new ball joints and steering rod ends too.

Thanks, I think it did! Hopefully he will join here! He used to have a 63 chevy truck and said his dad is a mechanic at an International truck dealer. Talking with him, I got a pretty good feeling!
