Can someone help me with a aftermarket shock absorbers (front and back) for my 54 3100 half ton. Want stock, non gas. Monroe or otherwise. Need part numbers. Thanks

i don't know if you have an o'riley's auto parts store in your area but they carry them as well - may not have in stock but will order for you.

Gas shocks are better. I like Monroe,s. Napa has them.

I see this is an old thread but does anyone know if the 54 came with two different types of mount. I have a 54 and need to replace the REAR shocks. I took a quick look at them and I am 99% sure both the top and bottom connected by eye type connection. I was actualy working on something else and not paying much attention. I could be wrong. The picture on LMCTRUCK for their replacement shows eye connection on both top and bottom but every other parts place I check show the Monroe shocks as an exact fit for my 54 3100 but they are eye connection at the bottom and stud connection at the top. I have seen several people post on Stovebolt the Monroe's fit perfect but no one has said anything about the connection type. Eye or stud on the top.

Your local Napa store or Parts Plus store should be able to get you the shocks you need for your truck. That way if for what ever reason they aren't right, you can return them.

You can look at them before buying to make sure they are right.

Others like Oreilly's and Autozone should be able to get the correct shock for your truck.

Thanks. I just ordered the shocks from rockauto. Great price. Everyone else wanted $10 more. $13.97 vs. $25. Their shipping was cheaper also. $7 vs. $10 from everyone else.

I tried to install the rear shocks this weekend. The first one came off with a breaker bar and a little muscle on the bottom stud the shock slips onto. I didn't even try the top bolt. I just cut it off with a cut off wheel. The other side was a different story. I put the wrench and breaker bar on the nut for the bottom stud. Even though it appeared to be in good condition I twisted the stud right in two. The stud was a single piece that was part of the "u" bracket that bolted onto the leaf springs. Fortunately the new shock came with a "replacement stud". Unfortunately the only was to use it is to remove the bracket, drill a half inch hole in the 3/8 inch thick bracket to insert the new stud. There is no way to access and drill it while still on the truck unless I pull the entire axle out. I have not started this task. I am worried I will have the same issue removing the bolts to the "u" bracket even though they appear in good condition. If one of them break off this will not be an easy part to locate a replacement for. On the bright side, the first one was easy to replace. You can never count on these old truck to give anything up easy.

PB Blaster is your best friend when removing old nuts and bolts. Soak them down good and wait a day or two. Should come loose easily then. Try tightening them just a touch before loosening them. If you have access to an air/electric impact wrench the vibration helps loosen the rust keeping the nut/bolt from breaking loose. Good luck.

Thanks. I will give that a try and I do have an air impact wrench. I will put it to work also.

Remember to dial back the power a little so you are not as likely to twist it off with the impact.

31069 Front
31163 Rear

Can anyone confirm? They were for a 1950 Half Ton, but I don't think anything changed.
