I was putting my 1940 216 together on the stand and I wanted to set the valve clearance. Of course I didn't have the flywheel on so I used the position of the lifters to deduce the proper spot for TDC. I noticed that there is a hole in my balancer just inboard of the pulley and it was at the very bottom at the time. I am wondering if that hole is there for reference.

If that is in the face, that where material was removed to balance the balancer.

I guess I am just lucky but now I have a handy reference. When I put the flywheel on, I found out I had it half way between the triangle and the ball.

If you can't see any timing marks, using tappet motion isn't as easy as it looks - both valve are closed for a long time in these engines.
To help: the cylinders run in pairs. When one of each pair is @ TDC on compression (with both valves fully closed), its partner is @ TDC on overlap and has its valves moving in opposite directions. Pairs are separated by 3 places in the firing order (1 5 3 6 2 4).
