I'm trying to remove the heater from the cab but no luck

So far, I have:

1. Removed the heater hoses.
2. Removed the remains of the defroster duct work.
3. Disconnected all wiring.
4. Detached control cable from heater unit.
5. Removed six bolts securing heater to inner cowl,(both front AND back of heater).
6. Removed two nuts from engine side of firewall attached to heater support bracket.
7. Removed gasket from around blower motor.
8. Inhaled rust, dust, dead insects, and mouse droppings.
9. Put a new "twist" in my back and neck

But anyway, I can now get it to move about 1/4" up and down, but there still seems to be SOMETHING thats holding it up. Does anyone know what that could be? I haven't been to aggressive with it yet because I don't want to break something else, but I'm considering a crow bar next.

I f I am remembering correctly that Heater (fresh air type) has to be pulled toward the back of the cab to get the inlet and outlet tubes of the heater core free from the fire wall. Once that is done then you should be free ( I think?). You may wnat to check the gromets around the heater core tubes as they may be stuck. Good luck

Brian, the heater core tubes are already clear of the firewall. On mine, the hoses came through the firewall and clamped onto the tubes inside the cab.

I did some more looking around, and there appears to be a door of some kind opening into the louvered section of the outer cowl. In fact, the control cable I disconnected looks like it might control that door. However, I can't get it to budge. It is probably rusted up tight. Maybe if I start gently beating on it with a rubber hammer???

Sounds like you have the 54-55 1st series deluxe heater. I just finished going threw my 3rd Deluxe heater for the 1947-53 and none of them had the extra vent going into the cowl area on the side.

Interesting.....I wasn't aware that there was a different heater for the '54-551st. There is definately a vent/door of some kind; I'm sure that it is what's hanging up the whole mess. I tried again tonight, but it just won't move any more than 1/4". Guess I'll try spraying some PB Blaster through the cowl louvers. At this point, I'm ready to try anything.....

I was recently looking at my heater, pondering if I wanted to remove and restore it. First time in years I carefully looked at the name on the heater and found that it read "Deluxe Red Head".

Now gents, who on earth would ever think about removing a Deluxe Red Head from their truck. I think I keep her in place for the time being. Besides it's still a little nippy in the mornings.

It's nice that your "deluxe redhead" keeps you warm in the mornings. Does your wife know about this? (I could be very crass about the function of a heater here, but my wife is looking over my shoulder!! :o )

My heater is more of a "dirty brunette", but I think she'll clean up nicely! (If I can ever get her loose from the inner cowl!) I'll try again tonight, when I get back from work, although I may not feel like it. Saturdays in the hardware business are crazy this time of year.

Cmayna that DL51 DeLuxe Red Head heater just happens to have been the last heater in my pile that I went threw yesterday. That's the one that mounts to the firewall, has the two long vents in the front cover and the defroster ducts on the drivers side of the heater. That one was a nice change compared to the Fresh Air Deluxe Heaters. Took me a whole 5 minutes to take apart......LOL

Within the last two weeks I restored (3) Deluxe Fresh Air Heaters, the Red Head Deluxe heater and a heater with defroster option for my 1950 Willys Jeepster. I started cleaning out one of the sheds and started finding heaters every where so now their all painted nice and pretty and stored in the new shed all in a row

53 I don't know if there is room or if this could be an option but you might try to seperate the 2 halves of your heater. The should be held together around the edge with small sheet metal screws. If you can get the half that is toward your cab off you maybe able to see what is holding up the removal. I am trying to remember if there are any "hidden" screws. I don't think that there are but I am not sure. I get the chance today/ tonight I will go out and see just how many screws are holding mine together.
