Help, I have been painting my 51 in parts, cab, then doors, fenders,etc. I know I havn't painted in 30 years used enamel in the past, two stage is supposed to be more forgiving. I have been using Sherwin-Williams, Dimension 4, two stage, omaha orange. My problem is it didn't cover worth a darn. I have gone thru several gallons. I complained to the jobber (a local co.) you gotta mix it was the reply. This stuff looked like it was a pearl or three stage paint.Finnally I went on the Sherwin-Williams sight and looked up the paint code GB-39634, the description: Highly transparent Color Use similar colored ground coat. What? Would this be used as a repaint of the same color? If there is a color difference, different primer colors for instance it takes 6-8 coats to cover. I tried a gray sealer on the last fender and after three full coats it is a definite darker color than the buff primed fender. Me thinks the jobber is less informed than I am and I must not be that smart to keep buying and trying,it ain't cheap. Even changed to an HVLP gravity gun that works well. There seems to be a base coat same S-W Dimensions 5B-39634 stated for overall refinishing only, not for panel match. Me thinks this should have been the formula I should have rececived. You'd think a two stage base coat is a two stage base coat. What do you think!I'm out of paint again, should I try another Brand or shoot the jobber.

The problem is that is a lead free color made in a low grade paint and simply transparent. Does you jobber mix any other lines like Genisis?

I thought they stopped putting lead into paint these days. Leaded paint is still available?

I am not sure if there are any leaded toners left. When I was working for S-W two and a half years ago there still was leaded toners. We have a S-W system at work and I am pretty sure that they are still the old toners, so yes they should still be there.

For instance I have mixed up school bus yellow in both lead containing and lead free, they had two different formulas!

The lead is only going to be in yellows and reds, they are the only colors that need lead because of the transparency of the toners.

But the lead is not that needed,dependng on what brand and label of paint. The Genisis line from S-W for instance has SUPER high hiding colors in lead free. I have seen it cover TOTALLY in one coat, in bright yellow!

It is much more expensive but when it covers so fast, it actually costs less.

That's good info, my truck is Omaha Orange and I want to repaint with a similar color.

Omaha orange, ahhhhhhhhh brings back memories. That was the color I first shot my '48 on Aug 1st 1977, no kidding.

I have been using ebay purchased Hawthorn acrylic enamel for the underside of fenders, running boards, inner fenders, hood, etc. every place not normally seen due to the high costs of 2 stage. $35.00 a gallon plus the dreaded shipping and handling. Right to your door from www.paintforcars.com darn stuff is good, I as a non-pro painter can see no difference in coverage from PPG acrylic, to this Hawthorn, yah gotta try it! They have primer, acrylic clear, hardner etc., no Reducers, and no color mix you hafta use the colors available, but they had Omaha Orange, AHH, what a color, sweet !!

I painted my first car after not touching poo since 84. things are not at all the same. The paint is enviro. friendly and the choice is all new. I sprayed my wifes mustake with 3 coats of urithain. It was almost see through. I bought a gallon and used half of it. So I masked it and used the other half gallon and it came out collored. no runs but it was a good practice job. Don't tell the wife, good luck, be patiant. O
