Hi all. I am planning to paint stock rims in two tones: orange and silver / grey hammertone. One color will go in the center and the other on the outer ring.

Do you think the rims would look better with orange in the middle and hammertone on the outer ring, or hammertone in the middle and orange on the the outer ring?

Would I be crazy to paint the rims on one side of the truck reverse of the other side to see which one looks best?

The truck is a satin black '52 GMC.

I decided to paint the rims orange in the middle. The color scheme looks good to me but my painting sucks - I had a lot of difficulty with "orange peel".

A two-tone scheme was used instead of one because I felt that fully orange wheels would be too much for 16" rims.

looking good! Are you using spray paint? If so, soak the cans in a bucket of HOT water.... I drop them in till the water starts to cool down, then empty and refill bucket with fresh hot water, and then pull a can out and start painting. That helps the paint lay down smoother and dry a bit faster.

I usually put mine near an incandescent light bulb to warm it up. Not sure how much heat they can take before bursting but a few minutes, shake it, few more and it seems just fine.

I set mine on the floor next to the deep freezer vent. Nice little warm air breeze there.
I have left a can in the direct sun too long one day and it came out of the can like wasp and hornet spray!

How old is the Orange paint? Did you shake the crap out of it before spraying? Did you try a different nozzle? All these things can affect outcome.

Also, the painted rim appears to be a 6 clip...which is narrower than the 3 clip... Is that what I'm seeing in the pictures?

The problem I think is that it is cold here (maybe 2 to 10 degrees C) and my garage is not heated.

Yeah, these are the 6 clip wheels. I don't really have a good set of hubcaps, and that's a big reason for painting the rims...

You shouldn't even try to paint steel when its temperature is below 70 degrees, imho.
