I have a 47 gmc with an external Fram filer on it. This is a stock truck. Stock motor trans everything. So here is the question. The filter is supposed to be a Fram c4p It is a metal cartridge with 6 diagonal rows of 5 holes. When you go online you can still see pictures but when you go to buy one, it is totally different, It is a cardboard looking sides with a paper element behind it. According to Fram customer service it should be a replacement but it is so much different I have my doubts. Anyone used the new one in place of the old one? How is it working?

I use Wix filters in my canister. A few years ago I read a lot of bad about Fram. I don't believe the design of a filter's looks affect it's performance. As long as the filter media has the correct size and number of holes it should work fine. You don't have to buy filters on line. Any local parts jobber should have them in stock or be able to get it next day.

I agree about Wix filters. Both Napa & Carquest have Wix filters under there own brand name. The first 1 or 2 numbers in the part number designate which one.

+2 for the WIX or one of the NAPA clones. Fram does a lot of advertising, and every ad dollar they spend is one that can't go toward top quality materials and quality control. It's interesting to take a cutoff wheel to a few spin-on filters of different brands and look at the materials and manufacturing methods hiding under the outer canister. At least you can see the differences in construction and materials for filters used in the old style housings.

Well I went to Napa today and bought the Napa one. Heres to hoping it starts the first time. Thanks everyone I appreciate it. If I could figure out how to put a picture here I would.
