Anybody got any photos showing the proper location for this? I have one photo of a stovebolt with this antenna positioned on the driver side cowl, but I'd like to see others for confirmation before I go ahead.

They may have been mounted on the side of the cowl by whoever but this wasn't the norm.

Well, I'm putting an antenna on the side of my truck. The PO had an electric antenna on the top cowl, but it had to be down when I opened the hood (or the hood would bust the antenna) -- great planning there, eh? And also, the motor was visible under the dash, and if that wasn't bad enough, water was coming in all the time.
Anyway, I like the way the side mounted antennas look, so I guess I'll just do my thing. My truck is a hotrod, so it doesn't really matter ... but I do prefer maintaining an original look to my truck as much as possible.

I believe it came that way from the factory with the antenna mounted between the door and the cowl on the side. Seems like whoever ordered the truck ordered the antenna but not the radio!!! 1948 3/4-Ton 5-Window Flatbed Chevrolet 34 Years. Now with a '61 261, 848 head, Rochester Monojet carb, SM420 4-speed, 4.10 rear, dual reservoir MC, Bendix up front, 235/85R16 tires, 12-volt w/alternator, electric wipers and a modern radio in the glove box.

I'm wondering now if that's the *original* style for GMC trucks??? The first pic I saw with this style antenna was also a GMC. Anyway, I got the antenna today and man am I glad I did -- I pulled it open to it's fullest length and it measured 8 FEET!!! LOL! I should be able to pic up stations in Europe with it fully extended, eh? I like the mounts, too -- this, to me, is what a truck's antenna SHOULD look like.

The weight of my antenna tends to open the vent a bit. The vent was orignally held in position by the adjuster lever sliding in a slit made in some thick felt. I made a new piece from winter boot felt but it doesn't do the job. Any ideas about what to use there (besides duct tape holding the lever closed)?
